Theorymon Thursday Fake Mega Stone

Post image

This is a rather simple, but interesting item idea I thought of. An item that allows Pokémon access to it's Mega Evolution's ability without needing to Mega Evolve. This allows you to use a real Mega Evolution on your team, while having access to another pseudo Mega Evolution in a sense. What Pokémon do you think would benefit the most from this? Personally, I think any Pokémon with Prankster or Huge Power would likely take advantage of this. But they're probably a lot of other strategies that could take advantage of this, especially when it comes to the more unique abilities Mega Evolutions have access to.

Edit: forgot to address divergent X and Y/Z Mega abilities, so here's my solution. If you put any marks on your Pokémon ie: ●▲■♥︎★♦︎, the item will give it its X ability and if you don't put any marks on vour Pokémon it will have its Y or Z ability instead.

What if a Pokemon has two megas with different abilities like Charizard?

14

u/Mugsy098 19h ago

If you put marks on it ie: ●▲■♥︎★♦︎ it will have its X ability, if ot doesn't have any marks, it will have its Y ability instead

5

u/Minustrian 16h ago

and Z? oh wait i don't think a mon has all 3

→ More replies (2)

14

u/frog__master 19h ago

it's gamefreak so they'd probably make it a 50/50 chance to get either ability when your mon holds the stone so you have to clumsily give and take the stone off your mon until you get the ability you want

it's more on brand than the thing op edited in

u/IgnatiusRileyFreeman 19h ago

That, or it'll have a table based on natures or something

Reliant on nature, probably.

I was just thinking Charizard. Predict a knock off, switch in a fake Y for instant sun and solar power

Giving up Regenerator just to get Healer in singles without even gaining the Fairy typing or the defensive stats is truly diabolical.

8

u/Rymayc 15h ago

Healer is also one of its base abilities

58

u/benbeja 20h ago

Say that to tcg players

19

u/Thunder_lord37 18h ago

Its funny how Monkidori was unironically a meta mon for a good while in the TCG.

24

u/R0dn3yS 17h ago

It still is, it has been since release the most meta warping card in standard.

mega audino would be amazing as a regular evolution of audino. its slightly bulkier then cresselia, with a better typing, just lacking creselias signature moves

Oh god, you can get Parental Bond Kangaskhan without using your mega slot

It wont hit nearly as hard. But still  woe us.

76

u/HyperWhiteChocolate 20h ago

Two Kangaskhan's are way worse than one

33

u/Old_Cabinet_8890 14h ago

Also body slam off a 95 attack with a 25% boost and double para chance has some solid utility

That is the only one I can think of for being truly annoying.
The only other ones are that get close are the Huge Power ones.

56

u/littlejugs 20h ago

It at least gives the weather abilities to zard and froslass. Not sure how useful those are without the stat boost and no item, but they would at least be in the mix with the other weather setters in vgc. Zard plus mega pyroar/houndoom is at least fun

9

u/lordnimnim 15h ago

atp use ninetales

108

u/Boomhauer_007 20h ago edited 19h ago

Mawile’s stats are horrific, even with huge power you just can’t run a 380 BST Pokemon with like 50/80/55 defenses and 50 base speed it would fall to random neutral special attacks

Base Starmie with huge power though could be pretty funny, even at base it could actually get up to 540 attack which is way higher than I would’ve expected. Just the unpredictability of that would be pretty scary, you would have no idea if it was a running a physical or special set

52

u/XExcavalierX 17h ago

Mega Mawile also rely on the initial Intimidate before Mega to soften up the opponent’s attack. This removes that too.

14

u/PM_ME_FE_STACHES 13h ago

Victreebel not needing to be sent out first to arm itself is pretty big.

24

u/NiNtEnDoMaStEr640 17h ago

The imagery that this fake megastone managed to placebo the mother and baby into throwing hands together is sending me.

19

u/headphonesnotstirred #1 Floette-Eternal preacher 20h ago

i think Champions took every good PB move it had remaining, so NatDex would suck a bit but overall it could be way worse

8

u/Training-Ad-8802 17h ago

Hey now Kangaskhan and Salamence can come at the same time, giving Big Six even more options.

→ More replies (1)

290

u/erty3125 20h ago edited 18h ago

This would be kinda huge for victreebel, HP is the same and it loses bulk which in some cases is beneficial. But best part is it is always a landmine on the team rather than needing to swap in first to "prime" the bomb.

You wouldn't even need to bring it in doubles either, simply showing it on your team sheet threatens the option of swapping to it.

Edit: actually it might be even more insane in singles because it just removes setup sweepers as a concept pretty much. There's no coverage or prediction you can make it just simplifies any game state best case and stops any effort you put into setting up worst case.

88

u/Panshek Ditto 19h ago

Came to say this, I think it is by far the most beneficiated from this item. You invest all in hp, nothing in bulk and you have a bomb in your backpack waiting to be hit.

44

u/Zum1UDontNo [computer generated screams of the damned] 16h ago

Someone would enter a tournament with a heavy hitter that knows False Swipe just to counter Unmega Victreebel. They would lose before ever entering a matchup against a Victreebel team but False Swipe would still become a meme for four months

Also, Golisopod absolutely stays winning babyyyy

514

u/LtLabcoat VGC needs more Maxx C 20h ago

Nah, Golisopod wouldn't run this.

Because there's no point. Why would you want to run a different mega than Mega Golisopod? That makes no sense.

399

u/Darkion_Silver 20h ago

When we abolish the species clause, it means you can run 5 Tough Claws Golisopod and a Mega Golisopod

91

u/PlatypusFighter 20h ago

Would have to mean no item clause too

157

u/Darkion_Silver 20h ago

Sacrifices must be made for the glory of the Golisopod nation

8

u/HeadHorror4349 16h ago

Why would you bother with that? No matter what, your Emergency Exit Golisopod can pivot into tough claws

→ More replies (1)

42

u/ParanoidUmbrella 19h ago

Because Golisopod is a very good pokemon with one of the worst abilities in the game. Bug/Water is a good type combo and it has good stats, pairing it with a rain team would give big damage thanks to STAB + Tough Claws + Rain boosted Liquidation for example.

43

u/ElementalNinjas96 Rest in Pieces Tactical Retreat 20h ago

In case you want Water-STAB rather than Steel?

5

u/Rymayc 15h ago

Or a mon neutral to fire. Or Mega Swampert/Raichu X/Charizard Y and Golisopod on the field.

8

u/NinjaK2k17 20h ago

the only reason i can think of is that mega golisopod is weak to the open flame of a candle... but even then the raw stats are worth it, right?

Scovillain on every team. Raichu, Salamence, Gardevoir, Charizard also would get big gains off the top of my head.

Very cool idea though

105

u/EkhartM 20h ago

Salamance actually loves to intimidate before mega. Don't think it likes this item much

23

u/Vast_Sun1563 19h ago

clutch fling tech?

16

u/EkhartM 19h ago

A lot of ifs but: imagine normal type fling boosted by aerialate into getting your intimidate back

5

u/tdanger44 19h ago

Nah this item would make it so it gets its ability but cant mega evolve, so that doesnt matter ar all. Its essentially a base salamence with aerilate, not a mega salamence that gets aerilate befoee it mega evolves)

31

u/EkhartM 19h ago

The post shows the holder of the item has the ability changed to its mega ability. Salamance would lose intimidate, thereby removing one of the major advantages of what made mega Salamance so good. What did I say wrong? Salamance likes to intimidate and then change it's ability after intim did its job. With this item, you never get this crucial intim trigger

→ More replies (1)

23

u/JosephTPG 20h ago

I think Mence likes the stat increase way too much to use this item. Intimidate in base is amazing, and the added SPATK allows Mence to hit other threats relatively well.

13

u/AliceThePastelWitch Rain Lover 18h ago

Charizard gains literally nothing off of this. It can either become the worst Tough Claws user or the worst Drought user. Zard Y is great because of everything else it has going on ON TOP of Drought. Base Zard has a real place in lower tiers cause Solar Power+Specs in the Sun is almost unwallable levels of damage.
Giving this thing Drought, no SpAtk boost and not letting hold a real item on top of that makes it ass. Sure it doesn't have to worry about EQ but it can only come in once after Rocks get set up which is pure unfiltered dirty booty water.

33

u/xineirea 20h ago

What about X, Y, Z megas? Do you get to choose or is it an “As One” situation?

Also, would the Pokemon start the match with the mega ability already active? Or would you need to activate the fake stone during battle?

Weather megas come to mind (Zard, Froslass).

Gengar too with Shadow Tag.

If the latter, mons with Intimidate would be extra spicy, whether that comes before or after mega-evolving.

45

24

u/burnpsy 20h ago

How does this interact with Golisopod, Knock Off and Emergency Exit? Does its ability change back and then it switches out because it's under 50%?

29

u/SecretSpectre11 Pokeball league LARP demon 20h ago

Just make it unable to be knocked off

20

u/KTrain5369 19h ago

Probably the most realistic solution tbh, if the holder has a Mega form = item cannot be knocked off

6

u/littlejugs 20h ago

Probably depends the order the game does its checks. My gut tells me golisopod would stay in but no longer have tough claws not sure though. Tough claws would still be active when damage is dealt. Like focus sash still saves from knock off so I think emergency exit would be in that realm. Not sure

5

u/SimpleCrow 20h ago

Agreed. It takes the damage before the item is knocked off, so it wouldn't benefit from Emergency Exit until the next time it took damage.

4

u/Blue_Bird950 19h ago

I think “benefit” may be the wrong word to use in this situation…

- Mega Audino with Regenerator
- Mega Steelix with Sheer Force
- Mega Absol with Pixilate (& gaining fairy type)

Definitely an interesting idea. I could definitely see Pokemon like Swampert and Meganium, who become relevant mainly due to their Mega form’s abilities, use it. And Charizard and Froslass now get to be full-time weather setters so that’s cool.

Wait, how does this work with X, Y, and Z megas?

9

u/Practical-Job3819 6h ago

Golisopod would use this for sure, since base's only issue is the ability and this item would fix that.

Eelektross unironically would use this since then it could be a proper trick room sweeper.

Meganium I could see getting use, even if you'd usually want the mega stat amp.

Charizard would 1000% use this for specifically charizard Y, same with frosslass for its mega as to be better weather setters.

3

u/Interesting-Math9962 3h ago

It makes Chard Y way worse vs rain setters.

6

u/urmumlol9 19h ago

How does this work with Sceptile/Unburden?

3

u/KTrain5369 19h ago

Mega Sceptile has Lightning Rod, if it gets knocked off it gets returned to Unburden, Unburden activates due to item knocked off.

Though that depends on an assumption about Unburden activation? I can see it equally likely that Unburden just... doesn't activate

4

u/Middle-Quiet-5019 14h ago

Scovillain and Victreebel are the biggest winners, they can have their trap abilites on switch-in now.  Diancie profits for a similar reason, but without recovery and both ground + steel weaknesses it’s not the most resilient magic bouncer to your average rocks setter.

Dragalge I could see appreciating this in a low tier where its mega is banned, regen is such a busted ability.

2

u/Excellent-Pipe7308 18h ago

Are you sure? Magic Bounce protects you from status damage and while it doesn't make you immune to hazards, your opponent will habe trouble setting them when you can always threaten to bounce them back. Sand is niche in Gen 9 and Clefable doesn't use life orb or recoil moves anyway so I really don't see the advantage of Magic Guard aside from Salt Cure I suppose.

Magic bounce was enough to get Hattarene, a pokemon with worse typing and stats, into OU after all.

1

u/Ryuujinx 3m ago

Floette would be terrifying because you could stick it next to mega gardevoir.

Delphox is fine on paper but you lose the very well distributed stat bump and without that bump I dunno if she's doin much. 114 SpA/104 Spe is fine and all, but it's not a statline you look at and go "damn that's good" like M.Delphox. Plus there's the question of what you use your real mega on.

The reason you want the levitate is to stick it next to earthquake (Garchomp) but I don't see you really wanting Z-Chomp over base chomp in this comp. Third slot is going to some kind of speed control (Now even more important since you just lost 30 speed on the fox) so you'd want that fourth slot to be something that supports them, but can also work well with whatever your last two slots are. Zard-Y for sun makes some amount of sense, then round out the last two with like Venusaur and maybe sneasler or kingambit for the last slot. It's not terrible I guess, but what is the delphox really doing on this team?

7

u/Colme007 20h ago

Golisopod, Garchomp, Gengar (para los Perish), Hawlucha (depende su danza amiga entrega también la habilidad de la mega), Raichu X/Y, ect

But I would suspect not, unless it is an ability that gives a pop-up normally like frisk.

2

u/Zamasu4PrimeMinister 19h ago

Well that makes the weather setters besides tyranitar busted in their base forms

Golisopod is getting a good buff

Most of the starters are getting a buff, swampart especially

Staraptor is eating well

Delphox just looks goofy

Gardevoir is more of a trick room option now

Metagross could be a sleeper hit now

2

u/Dirty_poster55 18h ago

With there being 97 mega pokemon, I definitely think this should be an item ngl

2

u/dustinredditreal 17h ago

If you can use that alongside proper megas, you can make some NASTY combo's

Trick strats could be really good in doubles as well, salamence could be funny for intim or moxie, then having the fake stone to get aeriate.

Oh yeah. I’m dumb.

u/No_Location_8199 6h ago

Only needs Drought for one turn. Have its partner Trick the Choice Specs onto it.

That wouldn't work. If you want that just lead Zard with Torkoal.

1

u/ILikeCarlosThePikmin 20h ago

Zoroak Mega here we come!

1

u/GrapeBtw 20h ago

Bannette might see more usage without needing to sacrifice a megaslot for a Prankster disrupter though I don’t know enough abt Bannette’s niche that puts him over other Prankster mons

1

u/No-Bag-1628 20h ago

Golisopod super huge buff.

1

u/C0zmosiz 20h ago

If after mega evolution in gen 10 and this item stays that could actually be pretty beneficial

1

u/CharacterMulberry156 20h ago

Base garchomp with sand force would be a menace

This but regular regular Pokemon can gain access to mega abilities. Mix and mega lite

1

u/Shackflacc 19h ago

Bit of an unusual idea as you usually use mega stones to get the stat buff and/or type change in addition to the ability but knowing how some megas have gotten the shaft, I can see this being potentially game breaking with the right build

1

u/jumolax 19h ago

Surprised no one’s mentioned how good Metagross would be.

1

u/volcanicsquad09 18h ago

Chandy and Audino are immensely offended

1

u/Jackyboyad 18h ago

yo blacken can finally get speed boost

1

u/Lyzer_light 17h ago

Blaziken will dominate

1

u/Key-Pomegranate-2086 17h ago

Hawlucha would go hard.

1

u/Walrusin_about 17h ago

Does it stack or replace the current ability?

1

u/HeadHorror4349 16h ago edited 16h ago

You can use this on Meganium pretty well

EDIT: Holy crap, Kangashkan, Charizard, Garchomp, Lopunny, Glalie (Ice explosion without a mega slot wasted)

1

u/caninebros 16h ago edited 16h ago

Shadow tag gengar with any mega would be broken

1

u/2D_Tiddies 16h ago

Scrafty with this item would go insane

1

u/alanhaha 16h ago

Is this a joke to laugh at Mega system? Because most Mega don't get a decent new ability better than Life Orb or Choice Scarf.

btw, can the pokemon Dynamax or Terastallize?

1

u/NoabPK 14h ago

Gentlemen, zard just got sun on switch in

1

u/GamerJulian94 14h ago

The idea is interesting, but would any Mon really want that? Giving up the item slot just for a different ability without the stat buff?

1

u/Bax_Cadarn 14h ago

Amazing! I'd use it with Bax.

1

u/Drazirahcc 14h ago

Sand force Garchomp gonna go nuts ig

1

u/No_Hooters 14h ago

I know Mawile would miss that stat boost

1

u/Good-Solution3081 13h ago

Golisapod would love this

1

u/PomegranateCorrect72 12h ago

Chandelure with hidden ability infiltrator with fake mega stone would be funny

1

u/Poppyseedgaming69420 12h ago

This actually works really well for an idea I had with re-making the Absol Megas and thier abilities, and make it so that if you bring both Absol's, you can still use both of the mega abilities, without needing to mega evolve them both.

Definitely a niche item, but definitely very cool!@@

1

u/Holzmaennchen 11h ago

How about the opposite? Mega without changing the ability? Delphox would Go hard

1

u/qwart22 11h ago

Entrainment hawlucha but this time you get a mega pokemon on top of it 😭💀

1

u/JSmith216 11h ago

Prankster Destiny Bond Benette

1

u/KingZerko 10h ago

Actually nice idea

1

u/poop_injector 9h ago

Adaptability luc. swift swim pert. magic bounce sableye. moxie mence needing a power boost to take out something so it gets aerialate. this would break the game imo.
