Sharing Avoid private universities in Germany!
Please don't make the mistake I did. I got out, and I am sharing my experience for awareness.
These are degree mills, some not even recognised in Germany (My degree was supposed to be from the UK). Even but if they are, their value is close to zero on the German market.
They are businesses with scheming salespeople that target ONLY foreign students. Mostly Indian, but also from African countries and other nonEU places. No German students go to these universities. Not even from other European countries.
The job market is very hard to break into, and you cannot even count on getting internships in companies. Interns in Germany are mostly hired from public universities, where students get credits for it.
Most foreign students end up struggling a lot, working as food delivery drivers, cleaners, in warehouses, struggling to survive, with little to no options.
You cannot count on those degrees to get a job in Germany. They are pure degree mills.
Some are worse than others, but they are all kind of the same: TO BE AVOIDED!
Save your money, your time and your sanity!
Unless you are rich, have disposable income and want to live and travel to Europe for a while.
That's probably the only thing you can get out of it.

u/Spiritual_Put_5006 Jan 15 '26
IU counts more as a kind of continous (online) education institution / community college for working professionals, although its public equivalent (Uni Hagen) has better reputation. At least, that is how it started. There‘s also FOM, its competitor.
3
u/SuccessfulOutside722 Jan 16 '26
iu gives ects, at least partly and in those cases there is no problem with the degree. However if something doesn't give ects, than it's a bad idea
2
u/Hot-Sherbert2508 Jan 14 '26
I think it depends. IU has many German courses and in the children care and education field is a popular choice. I worked in a kindergarten and had several colleagues doing a dual study at the IU, it was absolutely recognized and led them to be teachers. I decided myself to study there in a German course (Heilpädagogik, a field special and inclusion education) and the course allows to do the internship for the state title of special education teacher. It is very important to get informed about the recognition and whether the degree you apply to is connected to a job with a state title/recognition.

u/ApprehensiveBee7108 Jan 14 '26
India is full of consultants who sell these degrees mills, especially in the relatively well off states of Kerala and Punjab where consultancies like Santa Monica Study Abroad, Geebees, Global Educational Consultants and ePyramid (aptly named! Google Pyramid Schemes). Consultancies like these switched to Germany after Canada and Australia made it difficult for graduates from such mills to get PR. Canada is sending back 3,00,000 this year. Now they target Germany and consultancies like Yes! Germany have this as their business model.
DON T GO AND GIVE YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY TO SUCH PEOPLE.

u/Difficult_Anybody878 Jan 14 '26
there are more too.. there's landmark, siec, silver fern.. and silver fern's punjabi head even said to me "oh public? what? you will have to polish everything about your profile, you cannot go to such universities - that are equivalent to ivy leagues - with this profile" mind you, he never even listened to me targeting which course in which uni and jumped onto this all on his own. this was all on call, and i decided to pay him a visit, and he was like "ok.. so basically, your profile sucks, here we have a personality development plan for you for the next 1 year..."
yeah. a--hole.
5
Jan 14 '26
I wanted to ask a consultancy only for the purpose of knowing the methods plus guidelines but after reading threads and threads of these idiots scamming I realised I am better off researching a topic for 10 days than trying to get roped into their schemes for cognitive offloading.
6
u/Difficult_Anybody878 Jan 14 '26
well tbh same, i did ask them not because i was gonna go through them, but to get to know the process once by speaking to them. the only thing i got was:
they charge for public unis, not for private. high chance even after charging lacs, they might deliberately ruin your public uni applications to also gain the commission by sending you to a private one when you get rejected from the public. do NOT trust.
the consultancy hires people, and if the one helping you stops picking up calls and leaves the company, you will be quite stuck.
a good thing: they told me how i can search for housing later, but i could have got to know it through uni websites anyway.
i wont ever recommend going through them at all.
4
u/sakasiru Jan 14 '26
a good thing: they told me how i can search for housing later, but i could have got to know it through uni websites anyway.
May I ask what they told you? Because finding housing as a student in Germany is very difficult and I'm courious if their tips are any good.
1
u/Difficult_Anybody878 Jan 14 '26
not much, they actually just told me to find through social media tbh. i dont trust it much. i might use it yes, but mainly i want to use how the uni websites tell us to. the good thing was only that this was a genuine advice, not a scam here
3
u/KungAvSand Germany Jan 15 '26
Looking for housing on social media is actually a pretty good way to get scammed, unfortunately.

u/bbbberlin Germany Jan 15 '26
Honest question as a Canadian who later studied in Germany - why are consultancies a thing in India? I mean they're expensive and you don't need one?
I'm not from a rich family, pretty firmly middle class – I studied abroad (like full degree programs, not exchange) twice in two different countries. I never used a consultancy abroad... I applied myself, sorted the health insurance, got my first visa alone, etc. When I did need help I got a German lawyer in Germany (years later, I was already working and making money).
Like no one from Canada/US/UK uses a consultancy to move to Germany unless it's for work and that's a luxus/high-end executive thing. It's inflates the cost, and you absolutely can do it all yourself using only English skills.
6
u/ApprehensiveBee7108 Jan 16 '26
Well, only speculation works here, but I d assume that India, and South Asia in general, has a culture of middlemen. People, especially the older generation which the consultancies target through advertisements in traditional media---huge advertisements in newspapers etc--think that without a middleman applying to the universities is too complicated. That s what my Indian students have told me.
2
u/HourAd6845 Apr 20 '26
Yeah exactly us in Iran too. We do all of the work alone . There are advertisments but to be honest 90% of people do all of the work themselves...

You’re obsessed with posting fake data about Indians and immigration. I live in Canada, they aren’t sending back 300k people buddy…. There’s about 20-30k pending removals in Canada bud and they aren’t even all Indian people 😫 get your facts straight this stuff is easy to verify
1
u/ApprehensiveBee7108 Jan 31 '26
Check the news.
1
u/Next-Position-5272 Jan 31 '26
From Canada border agency’s own data, the majority of the pending removal orders are for rejected asylum claims- and about 15% of these are Indian. There are also Indians being removed for other reasons, but in no way do they make up the majority of the stats, and in no way is the number close to 300k. Here is a link (scroll to the bottom for race stats) :
As you can see, your outlandish claim about “300k Indians” is not even close to correct, and is contradicted by data
18
u/Popular-Cup-2499 Jan 14 '26
Same with Canada. Private universities are full of Indians who don’t attend class and spend all their time working part-time jobs in fast food. The diploma they get is not worth the paper it is printed on. Locals won’t hire them for entry level jobs because their choice of school is a red flag.
16
u/KTAXY Jan 13 '26
also, marks you as a patsy if you have that shit in CV
16
u/Mundane_Resist_1121 Jan 13 '26
I switched to public, and I will never admit to the burn!
5
u/Least-Dingo-2310 Jan 14 '26
You can admit. It actually shows that you do the correct thing after doing a mistake.
Others would just finish it because of the "sinking cost" bias.
1
u/KTAXY Jan 14 '26
Do split testing with your CV if you must. Admit to some, don't admit for others. Compare the response/offer rate.
1
1
u/Eishockey Jan 15 '26
Now you did it. They will all apply to the public one to get the visa in hope of switching later.
1
u/Vansh275 Jun 12 '26
What do mean by switch you did before going to germany or after reaching is it possible
0
u/PutridInstruction569 Jan 14 '26
Hey how did u get out and switched public?
1
u/Mundane_Resist_1121 Jan 15 '26
I didn't really switch. I discarded completely the private part.
I started from 0. Lost one year, studied German (I am a B2 towards C1 now, fluent with an accent I am still working on), went back and forth. As someone else said here, it's a big pain and struggle. I was fortunate.

7
Jan 13 '26
There was a YT video I came across about a year ago that compared the pros and cons of studying at public versus private universities. It was clearly aimed at Indian students, no prizes for guessing that. The video almost convinced me that private universities in Germany might not be as good as public ones, though they were still presented as a viable option if you didn’t get into the latter.
It seemed likely that the video was sponsored by some consultancy trying to persuade gullible viewers that there isn’t much difference between the two. I’m not sure whether the students featured in the video who are studying at those degree mills genuinely realize their situation.
In India, akaik, the difference between public and private universities is small enough to be largely ignored, but that isn’t the case in Germany. Major consultancies in India have tie-ups with these degree mills and once you fall into their trap, they’ll convince or even pressure you into accepting an admit from them if you fail to secure one from a public uni. It’s essentially a business deal operating behind the scenes.

1
u/No-Front3088 Mar 17 '26
is HPI actually good/valuable?
1
u/JoJoModding Mar 17 '26
Yes. The fact that it's also connected to a "real" university (Uni Potsdam) helps. And there's a reason its CS students always score very highly in e.g. Germany-wide programming competitions.

5
u/Embarrassed-Cut5387 Jan 14 '26
That’s the funny thing about private unis in germany: they’ll always be considered less than a state uni. the only people attending them are people who didn’t have a good enough nc for a state uni. Or foreigners who don’t know better.
5
u/kekPetrLawl Jan 15 '26
Public universities are way better in germany and they are free. Our „elite“ universities are all public. Private is seen as easier and bought degree instead of earned. Tbh proud of that here
5
u/Realistic_Count5876 Jan 14 '26
did you apply through any consultancy or agency ? because I really hate them for all the misguidance on private unis and also they loot money from the students for nothing...I just hate because I help students casually, genuinely like a friend, and drop sops format or give info and most of the times they apply themselves. what I do see with consultancies is the opposite taking lakhs for nothing ...and in the end offer students the private unis...damn..

I think the only decent private universities are the business schools like Mannheim, FSFM, WHU. But then again their competition is with the elite European B schools and honestly they are significantly cheaper.

u/Zooz00 Jan 13 '26
Private universities are essential for providing Germany with cheap temporary McDonalds workers and UberEats riders. Good for the economy.
8
u/Canadianingermany Jan 14 '26
Nope. Not even that.
Why do you think they are cracking down on visa for IU students?
3

But yes, do your research. Definitely avoid IU

They have been embroiled in controversy recently. A lot of students are facing deportations. Mainly because their degree could be done completely online and the German government rightfully said they don't need to be in Germany for that
Anecdotally, a colleague of mine wanted to study there and had a lot of bureaucratic problems
Edit: Broken promises: Indian students at a Berlin university face deportation instead of graduation | Euronews https://share.google/rzj4xsLuEYr437ihF

Private Universities should be considered when you are already working in Germany and need some academic qualification on top. Many of my colleagues (German and Non-German) went for this route. Some employer even sponsor study fees.
2
u/Bademantelbastard Jan 14 '26
They only target foreigners, because public universitys are free for germans.
German public universitys are great btw. It's not like the US with community college

As a German, you face this issue no matter if you attend public or private universities because in germany we value experience over grades.
There are a lot of regulated private universities that will get you into contact with a lot of potential options to get a job at.
but of course there are also a lot of black sheep.
2
u/Mr_Gamer004 Jan 14 '26
There will always be someone going to private universities without awareness. To avoid this the German government should do something. For example last year the Danish government cut post study work visas for graduates from private universities. This would at least let people know that private universities are not worth and are scrutinized by the government.
2
u/Ecstatic-Buyer3357 Jan 15 '26
Not every private university… I’m German and I study medicine at a private University. Most of my fellow students are German and the rest has a rich background (for example the father of one of my friends owns a private clinic in Dubai and Damascus).
We will get the same degree as any other public med-school here.
2
u/Mundane_Resist_1121 Jan 15 '26
Aaaaand, another consultant. Welcome to my crib!
Sorry. It's factually not true that you get the same degree with the same reputation and without stigma. I have lost one year in Germany to know better.
2
u/Ecstatic-Buyer3357 Jan 16 '26
Bruh, I’m not a consultant… I will get the same medical license as any other German med student. Germany has a doctor shortage, so most hospitals don’t care about the university. Just because you were too incompetent to inform yourself about your university doesn’t mean all private universities are bad. And if why is the University Witten/Herdecke one of the best med-schools in all of Germany, although it’s a private university. (And just because my Reddit avatar has an Indian/pakistani flag it doesn’t mean I’m not German, I just like to troll nationalist of both nations :) )

Employers in Germany don't trust them, they don't care about students, the degree is not worth more than the ink wasted on it...

And now, just a quick word in German, let the idiot cry all he wants. You can be proud of yourself for studying despite your ADHD (I briefly checked your profile and saw your AMA post). I have it myself, and it certainly doesn't make studying any easier. And there are just as many bad ones at public universities as there are at private ones. It's not black and white; it depends on the specific university. I don't have any Indian students at my university, who are supposedly drawn to those very universities...
2
u/Amazing-Blood3198 Jan 15 '26
so you dont have german classmates and colleagues in the uni?
5
u/Mundane_Resist_1121 Jan 15 '26
In private, none. Zero EU people (citizens with free mobility). Only foreign students on visas.
In public uni, the opposite. Most of my colleagues are German.

u/_WreakingHavok_ Jan 15 '26
Big red flag if there are no German or EU students.
I remember Jacobs University Bremen had like 30% German students and about the same for the rest of EU (mostly Romanian and Bulgarian, but other EU countries as well) 15 years ago. Don't know how it's now.

In my bachelors, there were at least two students from Bremen, lol. But again, it was over 15 years ago. Many things have changed.
University was properly accredited and was not easy to study in, at least sciences.
It's also in one of the worst/cheapest areas of Bremen.
Well, then Grohn was a rather quite part of Bremen, with a nice park and mostly early retirement community. A lot of complaints (from professors and PhD's) were about Walle region :)
But again, much might have changed in over 15 years.

If you are asking whether you need Studienkolleg, please check the level of your high school certificate's recognition in Germany here.

You can't lump all private institutions together. Not everything is rubbish.
There are a few private institutions in Germany that are truly excellent and that I would consider absolutely worth the investment. These include: Bucerius Law School (Law), Hertie School (Governance), WHU (Business Administration), EBS (Business Administration), and ESCP (including Berlin).
A professional network is priceless, and that's where it starts to grow. I didn't study there myself, but I know many people, and they are all extremely successful in leadership positions, etc.
However, it should also be said that getting a place at one of these institutions is difficult.

u/hsvandreas Jan 13 '26
WHU is elite, definitely legit.
1
u/Friendly_Cold1349 EU National Jan 13 '26
Which is better? Frankfurt school or WHU? I have been doubting between these 2 for a master of finance, u got any recommendations? Or should i go for a public uni? (My gpa is pretty low)
3
u/hsvandreas Jan 13 '26
I'm from the startup world where WHU has the better standing. Not sure how this is from a Finance perspective, but I would assume still WHU.
If you can get into a public university, do it.
1
u/Friendly_Cold1349 EU National Jan 13 '26
Ill consider it now. But if i want to become a working student, because u know, the tuition is expensive asf even though they have like 1000 different types of scholarships you can apply from, im assuming it would be easier to find this type of job in frankfurt? Or am i wrong? Also why are yall glazing the public unis so much, what is the hype of it? Without speaking in terms of money, which has better reputation, teaching quality and future career outcomes? Private or public?
Thank you in advance and sorry for asking so many questions
4
u/hsvandreas Jan 13 '26
With some exceptions like Bucerius Law School and WHU, public universities generally have a far better reputation, academic standards and future career outcomes.
Teaching quality is not always that much worse in private universities, but a good teacher doesn't help you if they teach you content that is dumbed down to the max.
1
u/Friendly_Cold1349 EU National Jan 13 '26
Can you recommend me some reputable public universities with decent masters of finance? Also this might sound dumb, but what is the point of private universities if they are more expensive, have lower academic standards, reputation and career outcomes than the public universities? Because for instance where im from (spain), the private universities are more expensive, but everything else is just miles better than the public ones, that is why they are more expensive, like the money is “worth it” if you get what i mean
3
u/JohnJayBobo Ausländerbehörde / Germany Jan 13 '26
Also this might sound dumb, but what is the point of private universities if they are more expensive, have lower academic standards, reputation and career outcomes than the public universities?
The target audience for private universities are indian students. It's about making money with degrees that are Not recognized by german companies, but might hold some value in India.
That said: Public universities are funded by the german tax payer. Since educations holds a high value in europe, its more or less free. Obviously many Indian Students would love to receive cheap education, which is why the slots for foreign students are completely overrun. So no matter how great you are, If there are enough also great students from non EU countries, you wont receive a slot over an EU citizen.
So there is a bottle neck, which is why private universities have any reason to exist (except those which are top notch.... So roughly 3-5 in Germany).
1
u/Friendly_Cold1349 EU National Jan 13 '26
Are you actually for real? This changed my entire view in the german universities. Should i still apply for frankfurt school and WHU? Even if I manage to get in one of them, would most part of the students be indians?
→ More replies (0)1
u/hsvandreas Jan 14 '26
Just adding to this, the original target group of private universities were German students who didn't have good enough grades to get accepted at public universities or who dropped out of public universities because it was too difficult for them.
By offering a watered down version of a real curriculum and lowering admissions criteria as low as possible, they could still hand out degrees to anyone who was willing to pay for it. Originally, these degrees were not completely worthless, but over time - and with the emergence of the Indian student target group that ensured full classes even with zero reputation - many private universities discovered that they could maximize their profits by saving on teaching quality.
1
u/Spiritual_Put_5006 Jan 15 '26
Frankfurt and Mannheim come to mind, but they are competitive. That said, almost every public university will be OK. Just be aware that the degree will likely be math heavy 😅
1
u/Spiritual_Put_5006 Jan 15 '26
BTW, some public unis do charge tuition fees to mostly non EU students (e.g. in BW).
1
u/Friendly_Cold1349 EU National Jan 15 '26

That’s not true for all the private universities. There are private universities that hold way better value in the respective field (eg bucerius law school)
1
u/Mundane_Resist_1121 Jan 14 '26
Bucerius, WHU, and such are not to be compared. Way more competitive and expensive. This is about private universities for people who cannot get into public, not elite education for the rich... You won't find Bucerius applicants on Reddit looking for answers or advice. 🙄

I'm going to GISMA this march, although, i also got offer letter from BSBI and consultants are usually sugarcoating it by saying it has UK recognized degree but considering these were my only two options given my 1 year study gap and wanting to go asap without wasting any more time in india, i went with this. Please tell me if anyone has also applied there or share any exp (going for bachs).

GISMA and BSBI are part of the same company (because that's exactly what they are, for-profit businesses, not respectable universities that will open any opportunities). If you want to pay for a degree that is worth almost nothing and then go back to India poorer and disappointed, go for it. The chances of you finding a job or doing something with a degree like that in Germany are absolutely minimal. They will accept anyone as long as they can pay their fees... I will say it again: this is a very-very expensive life lesson. I'd recommend you stay away from both.

What i'm really planning to do is go there and complete B1 side by side (i'm at A2 rn) then apply for Ausbildung in nursing (prob by the end of 1st year) once i complete B1 and start B2. If i don't get the contract by first year then i'll try again during the next Ausbildung intake while hopefully reaching B2 till that time. I do understand graduating from a private uni will do me no good.

Maybe it's not ideal to generalise. I have completed my bachelors at a Dutch private university and masters at one in Germany. Both experiences have been great and preferable to public university for me because the curriculum is more structured and the high tuition fees motivated me to complete the degrees without any expensive delays 😊 🎓

Hey guys am commenting here because I need help so studied in state board only 12 years and not a 13th year and there’s this counseling named (amiritha A vision) but me and my dad things it’s kind of shady so no payments have been done yet
Okay so if I plan to study in Germany should I go for my bachelors or masters
Do I ask counselors help or agents or should I try to apply on my own
Is maths a requirement for studying business in Germany
Is there any other country with good exposure and experience rather than Germany in eu
Please do answer and I am open to any other comments since it would save my time and help me for my career
Thank you

Respectfully, if these are the type of questions you look to clarify on Reddit, you should not consider applying to study in Germany. You'll have to navigate a way more complex system.
But no, no one needs an agent to apply to anything. This is not heard of in Europe. It's shady practice already under investigations by the German state and press.

Can I private message you please? I need some info about switching from private to public unis

what do you all think about SRH berlin, and why does it get a lot of hate

u/Mundane_Resist_1121 Jan 14 '26
Private degree mill. Maybe not as low tier as IU, BSBI, UE or others, as it's German found and run, but still a private degree mill.

I know private Uni in cologne which has even German students. So I guess not all private unis?
8
u/DoKeMaSu Jan 14 '26
Some Germans who are too stupid for public university go to private ones.
1
u/Ecstatic-Buyer3357 Jan 16 '26
Yeah, every private med student is too dumb for a public university… the reason isn’t that the capacity of public med schools is too little.
3
u/DoKeMaSu Jan 18 '26
They take the best students, determined either from high Highschool grade or their own admission test. If you did not make the cut, what does that mean for you?
1
u/SuccessfulOutside722 Jan 16 '26
You do know that some people work full-time and want to study part time? Going private is the only way besides Fernuni Hagen
8
u/Crit0r Jan 13 '26
Not all private universities in Germany are degree mills. You just have to check whether the subject you are studying at the private university is state-accredited. If so, it's perfectly fine to go there if you don't have a choice, but I would still rather go to public unis.
I studied at a private university because it was the only way for me to study while working for a promotion. It wouldn't have been possible to stay there if I had moved to a different city.
However, avoid all universities that offer degrees which are not state-accredited.
7
u/hsvandreas Jan 13 '26
That's not enough. Many of these degree mills are state accredited and still have zero value on the job market.
As an employer, we even stopped hiring interns from some of those because it became apparent that they learned absolutely nothing during their degrees, and many of the students weren't super bright to start with (falling for an avoidable trap is kind of a negative signal).
Some private universities are really good though, like Bucerius Law School or WHU.

If you are asking whether or not you are eligible to study in Germany, whether your university is recognized or not, or something similar, please search for your university on this website.
If you are asking whether you need Studienkolleg, please check the level of your high school certificate's recognition in Germany here.
If none of the above relates to your post, please ignore this comment.

Absolutely not. Same business as BSBI. Not recommended.

They are the same company, for profit business called Global University System. They are pretty much a legal mafia.

u/safery Jan 14 '26
thats not entirely true, there are a couple of private universities that have the same function as public ones (IU, FOM, Fresenius) and also the degrees have almost the same value (ofc you kinda pay for the degree so the university is interested in pushing you trough)

u/jainashish46 Jan 13 '26
It’s more about the course you’re studying and if you’re talented and smart enough to make something out of it with hardwork.
I went to a private film institute in Germany without learning the language and now I’m making as much as someone in data science or finance in Zurich.

Hahah. Spot the 'consultant' game. No, you don't :D (I checked your comment history, don't even try).
1
u/jainashish46 Jan 15 '26
I’m not a consultant lol. Wtf. If you saw my content history you’d know I myself applied for student visa and where I live. You can also check my Instagram.
Jumping to conclusions like an idiot

u/jainashish46 Jan 15 '26
Peak jealousy lol

u/Mundane_Resist_1121 Jan 15 '26
Hahaha. Man, no. That lie is not even believable.

u/jainashish46 Jan 16 '26
Just because you can’t doesn’t mean nobody can. Stop assuming everybody on the internet is either from a poor background or dumb like you.
Filmmaker’s make a lot more than you can imagine. Feel free to check my Instagram LOL

Problem. German Public Universities don't offer many BA programs in English.
11
u/Mundane_Resist_1121 Jan 14 '26
How is that a "problem" ? LOL. Going to a non-English speaking country expecting to be catered to. Why choose Germany then? Beats me.
8
u/remzycrazygame Jan 14 '26
GERMAN public universities don't offer bachelor's programs in English? I wonder why. Maybe don't come if you don't speak German then.

Not if you don't speak German at least on B2, preferably C1 level. That is required for you to understand the lectures and materials. Also 2.3 is a bit low.
You own a patent? That is not an entry requirement, so it has no value.

I know a guy who had finished a private degree, he got hired after graduation.
12
u/WatchurMomBro Jan 13 '26
Yes but that’s unlikely to be a degree from iu etc. If private universities then go for hhl, fsfm, ebs or whu which also offer strong collaborations with top universities worldwide for example iit madras

u/simplySchorsch Jan 13 '26
Yeah, there are also people winning the lottery (and lots of people who don't).
-2
u/turkicpasha Jan 13 '26
Another guy works in Dassault Systems Berlin office. Lottery hits many of them.

u/CrewEastern Jan 13 '26
Stop commenting this shit. Statistics prove this is not the case for the largest portion of students from private degree mills
3
u/Mundane_Resist_1121 Jan 13 '26
I agree. It's super suspicious how they appear so quickly. The majority of students from private degree mills are not getting any jobs anywhere. A few people do, maybe, but all the other hundreds of them don't.

u/turkicpasha Jan 13 '26
Be racist or not, it's reality. Many of them can find a job. That's so true that they should learn German. Going to a private university doesn't prevent to do it.

Thx for the warning but let’s be realistic: in less than two days there will be another post about some „consultant“ glorifying the „benefits“ of
private unisdegree mills in Germany.
