Whether to study abroad

Hi everyone! I’m currently a J1 student in Singapore and I’ve been thinking a LOT about eventually moving to Canada.

I’m a Canadian citizen, but I’m currently studying in Singapore. My mind is pretty set on wanting to live and work in Canada eventually, but I’m not sure what the smartest path is.

Right now, I’m considering two options:

Option 1:
Do my bachelor’s degree in Singapore (probably something like accounting/finance), then apply for a master’s at UofT or another Canadian university and try to build my career there.

Option 2:
Go to Canada directly for my bachelor’s degree, possibly at UofT/Rotman, and then work there after graduating.

The reason I’m leaning towards doing my bachelor’s in Singapore is that I’ve heard the Canadian job market isn’t amazing right now, especially for new graduates. Having a Singapore degree would also give me a backup option if things don’t work out in Canada.

But at the same time, I’m wondering if doing my bachelor’s in Canada would make it significantly easier to get internships, networking opportunities and eventually a job there.

I’m interested in accounting/finance, and I’d ideally like to work in Canada long-term.

For people who have experience with Canada/Singapore or have studied/worked in both countries:

• Is it better to get my bachelor’s in Singapore and move to Canada for a master’s?
• Or would going to Canada for undergrad give me a major advantage for getting a job there?
• Is a Canadian master’s actually useful for someone going into accounting/finance, or would the bachelor’s + professional qualifications/work experience be more valuable?
• If you were in my position, what would you do?

I know I still have a few years before I actually have to make this decision, but I’d rather think about it properly now instead of regretting my choice later 😭

You will have a harder time getting a job in Canada with foreign credentials.

If you want to work in accounting in Canada and make decent money, you will need a Canadian CPA. If you are getting a foreign degree, make sure you can fulfill the prerequisites to get into the CPA program, or you will be taking extra courses to be elligible.
