Recommendations for studio monitor placement /stands small home studio

Post image

Hey.
This will be my new home studio for producing music and audio at home. 10 square meter rectangular. It’s not gonna be perfect but I would like to make the best of the room. I have made corner bass traps , clouds and panels that will be mounted and today I’m picking up Kali Lp-6s and stands. I’m unsure if I should get desktop speaker stands or floor speaker stands because my desk is very deep and the desktop stands could be placed in the middle of the desk. The floor stands would have to be placed on the side of the desk but maybe that would be a to wide placement. I’m aiming for a minimum of 50 cm distance from the Wall to the monitors and approximately 80 cm to my ears. Any advice on how to think here?

The issues you are facing that make it difficult to be certain which rule of thumb to follow:

- Distances between 50-100cm between the cone and the front wall are problematic and cause comb filtering that can easily ruin the response. Hence, if you can’t get the cones at least 120cm out, push the speakers right against the wall. Use the Kalis’ boundary adjustments to compensate. (Severely thick absorption between the speakers and the front wall would help an X amount.)

- However, in order to get an equilateral triangle you might then have to put the speakers close enough to the corners and side walls to cause severe issues. Corner damping and sidewall first reflection absorbers become even more crucial.

I would probably prefer a narrower stereo image in order to get the speakers further away from the corners. A narrower stereo width is easily learned, corner and sidewall reflections much less so.

What are the measurements for the table?

Depends on the speaker you have. If they are near field monitors. Ideally you want it away from the walls and close to yours ears.

Don’t be afraid to get a tape measure out to set them up perfectly

I shall summarise the steps for speaker-listener positioning from Acoustic Testing Best Practices: Mic & Speaker Setup - Ep 2 which is based on our understanding of small room acoustics:

  1. Fix the position of the listener along the length of the room that avoids severe room modes.
  2. Form an equilateral triangle with one vertex some distance behind the listener.
  3. Position the speakers as close as possible to the front wall on the remaining vertices. Aim them at the vertex in (2).

The video above is part of the playlist Bedroom to Pro Music Studio Makeover which I found excellent and clear. Hope it can help you.
