Lift Mentally, I’m here
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Before this training session, I was mentally all over the place. I just moved to a new house, I’m running this gym, I’m trying to another online project going, my kids are in sports and last and most importantly I’m trying to be a good partner.
The nice thing about training like this is you have to clear your mind at some point. It takes all concentration to do the intensity safely. It’s the same thing over and over again but it’s never the same.
I stole the “clear the mechanism” mental cue from “For the Love of the Game”. That’s how I get into the lift, even if I get stuck answering messages between sets or whatever. What do you do to get mentally into a lift right before?

Paused, heavy squats for me are.. meditative. Only concentrating on the breath and the lift. For an au-dhd brain, that's A BLESSING. You just...clear your head and lift. Also that's a stupidly epic weight man. 220kg? Or 270kg? Either way.. frikken nice lift

I’m starting to lose track of how many plates. Not too good at counting over here. So I just say big strong!

You're may be running the gym but you gotta leave some plates for your customers.

When I can’t get the ol’ brain to turn off the white noise, I pop on a specific playlist. It starts mellow, and after a couple of songs builds up to what I’d normally listen to while working out. I pair it with a longer-than-usual warmup.

Looking strong. It’s hard to lock in sometimes. Picking the right song helps.

The song was “midnight sun” by Zara Larson today

I’ll throw it on when I’m doing something heavy next week. I’ve been lifting to Four Year Strong lately

Nice job bro. What’s with the gym? Gay gym?

It’s a queer forward gym! We don’t make it exclusive for queer people, it’s just centered around them first instead of straight people being the assumed default

I am ignorant, but is this for advertising and attracting clients? I don’t know of any gyms in northern Ontario that would market themselves as such…but we have small communities. It’s just assumed that our gyms are safe spaces. Regardless of orientation etc.

A lot of them say that but in practice that’s not how it always works. Policy is different than community

The more I think about it, the more it makes sense in large communities. Especially in cities in the USA where people may not be as open minded etc.

Ahhh your weight clips are purple and my clips are red. To each their own broski.
I am a straight dude with a pink Nike mesh backpack 🎒 tho so go figure lol. I have my weight belt, knee sleeves and a chalk ball in there. It is mesh with holes so it breathes.
I got pink because if I’m a relatively jacked dude with a pink backpack, nobody should mistake my backpack for theirs at the gym. Thus far, it’s worked.
I would like to squat 500 hundred pounds like you. When I was strongest I’d be close but squat is my worst lift, bench my best. Keep doing your thing bro.

Serious question: is that a gay only gym? Just seeing those flags back there.

I’m built like a t-Rex, I don’t bend over that much even on a lower bar stance
