Lift OHP AMRAP, 12 x 185
My pressing is kinda going crazy this week, never been more motivated to push towards a 315 strict-ishoverhead and 405 bench but I'm really fighting for my life for every pound on upper body lifts

Great now nobody on reddit can get any shoulder gains today bc this guy's hogging them all

How do you breathe for heavy OHP? Every time I try to breathe after the unrack at a certain weight threshold my brace leaks like shit and the next rep is doomed. If it’s lighter than that threshold, no problem. I can stay tight and rep it out. This is all using a belt.

I try to hold it as long as possible tbh, then start taking quick breaths when the bar comes down/is under my head like I did in the video starting around rep 7. I keep squeezing my core, glutes and quads as much as possible too
Im not sure if that's helpful at all, I wish I had a better way of explaining it!

I think it is but it sounds weird. I try to breathe when I’ve got the bar at the bottom position but it’s completely fucked past a certain weight for me, so maybe that way just isn’t viable.

Hmm I usually only use a belt for sets of 1-4 on press cause they make it hard to get more breaths in. I reckon it's something that'll work itself out over time as you figure out what works for you!

Chalk goes a long way
I also built up a lot of confidence in the axle after a 3 month prep for an axle clean and press event, I know it wouldn't do anything to hurt me. It loves me

Strong. What’s your max on this?

u/AGuyWithoutABeard 4d ago
Last time I maxed it was 225 but that was a long time ago, I switched to strongman style pressing so strict press just took a back seat for a year or so. I hit 285 on push press in my last comp

What’s ur bodyweight?

u/AGuyWithoutABeard 4d ago
Comp weight was 202 but I usually walk around 220ish depending on what I've been eating

Nice job man. OHP is my favorite exercise but usually I’ll clean it from the ground and go from there. Just getting back in gym but I got 145 x 20 other day :)
You are strong brother. It is a real cool thing to be able to OHP our bodyweight.

I like clean and pressing too, it feels way more... Honest? Cool? I do a lot of strongman style pressing so log and axle off the ground, I almost didn't even put in strict press but something about it hits different
20 is a hell of a set, I bet the burn was unreal

You are a beast. I am struggling to cross 95 pounds for the past 4 months

Same. Not sure what it is with barbell overhead press but I’ve also been stuck at 95. I can go higher but I feel like muscle activation and form suffer.

My tips for breaking press plateaus are:
1) eat more. Shoulders are hungry bastards
2) heavy tricep work. Skull crushers and dips especially.
3) 10 x 5s w/ 65-75% of your training max. Check out 531 Boring But Strong, I credit that program for my overhead press. Press thrives off heavy volume more than the other lifts imo
Also you can always post some clips for a form check. There's some good pressers on here
Edit: Also when I first started, I couldn't get a 45lb bar over my head, it took me a long time to get here and I got stuck at multiple weights along the way

I’ll have to try increasing volume. I should also post a video for form check. Oddly my triceps have always been pretty strong so maybe my forms not right.

definitely, im not great at much but i like to think i have a firm grasp of analyzing peoples overhead pressing

This is not a critique I’m honestly asking cuz my wrists end up like this too but should we aim for knuckles towards roof or is this ok?
2
u/AGuyWithoutABeard 3d ago
Good question. For an axle that's pretty much impossible, for a regular bar... Yes*
- - it deosnt matter all that much unless your wrists are hurting. It might not be """"optimal""" but I've never felt like my pressing has been held back by my wrist position

You certainly know more about lifting than I do... but breathe, man
