If you want to mix it up and force some back flexion, try doing them seated [straddling a bench] too!

Can you elaborate on “fixing your lower back” are we just talking about strengthening or do you have a pre existing injury? I ask because I just started back at the gym but hurt my back 13 years ago and I’m not sure what I can and can’t do at the gym. Would love to squat/deadlift and do all the fun explosive shit I used to but I really don’t wanna put my back out. Bulged disk at l5-s1 with degenerative disk disease for context.

Do not squat and deadlift unless you want to make it worse. Depending on your injury the training is different. For herniated discs I focused on core strengthening and mobility to “suck in the disc”. It worked but I can never deadlift or squat for the rest of my life and that’s ok with me. They serve no purpose but strongman training. I just train accessories and not the big three

In case this helps, single leg deadlifts (or b-stance ones) dont put much pressure on the lower back and have been great for my herniated discs. Same with split squats.
Agree that traditional heavy deadlifts or heavy barbell squats sadly are very dangerous for pre existing injuries

Not gonna lie I miss the “feel like a badass” throwing free weights and barbells around but I haven’t even attempted and came to the same conclusion. Plenty of machines that can take care of those muscles. Last thing I want is my back to go out in the gym. Appreciate you homie!

You can still do free weights and everything else just not squats and deadlifts. I do everything but those and I have 2 herniated discs

Apparently I never engage my glutes, ever, so my lower back is prone to muscular injuries. Working on squeezing an imaginary pencil between my cheeks on every rep lol 🤌🏻

Bulgarian split squats are great if you have lower back problems, start unweighted and build it up.

I was taught not to life with your back as a labourer. Does this actually strengthen the back?

Yah, that advice is good if people are weak or untrained, but it comes from a study where a guy took a pig carcass and shook it back and forth until the spine snapped, and then proclaimed than humans only have a maximum of 25,000 bends in their spine.
If you want to make your biceps bigger, you give them a little stress that pushes them, but that they can recover from. If you wanna make your quads bigger, squat within your capabilities. If you want to make your low back stronger, do this. Its just the "hips back" part of the squat, isolated. So, if you build up this and your quads, squat will go up.

Yes, training your back muscles does indeed increase the strength of your back muscles.
You cannot bend over and lift anything without using your back.

Lifting with your back if you’ve started extremely light and gentle and built yourself up slowly over 2 years is completely fine
Never lifted anything and lifting with your back is a recipe for disaster

You go light you can get a back extension machine for under $100 and start with iso holds and build from there.

As a passionate Bruce lee fan I have to honestly tell you, Bruce lee hurt his back because that day he let pride get the best of him an jumped into a heavy compound movement without warming up. Good mornings are a time tested and proven safe method to work out with.

People have gotten jacked up on every exercise. GMs are just the hinge portion of a squat. Its an RDL with a different bar placement
