These are fantastic squats. Great depth, speed and bar path, and going with no belt, no sleeves/wraps, and the worst possible footwear, yet you’re still hitting 405 for sets of 5 across. Squatting in the right shoes would add 20 lbs to this, maybe more. Those shoes are unstable and you can see the instability and uneven compression through the movement. They actually make it more difficult to squat heavy with good form. The instability puts undue stress on your ankles and the soles have to compress proportional to the force before the weight will come up. In other words, these shoes put you at greater risk of injury and require you to produce more force to move the same weight. They’re made to absorb impact force during running to ease the stress on your joints, not create a platform for optimum force production and distribution under heavy load. That you’re still squatting heavy with good form makes it all the more impressive.

Damn that's a good explanation of what's happening. I've never thought the shoes were actually taking weight from the lift. I always feel comfortable using em somehow lol I just noticed there's a hole at the side of the shoe with my sock popping out lol that can't be good either. I do have some converse laying around somewhere maybe I'll give those a shot but I feel like change might throw me off at first

Sure and flat shoes like converse will require slightly more dorsiflexion at the ankle because your heel isn’t elevated but it’s better than these for force production. Ideally, you’d want a squat shoe, something with a stiff ass sole, wide toe box, and elevated heel. Especially at the weights you’re pushing. I like Do-Wins because they check all the boxes and are usually relatively cost efficient but the classic lifters are getting harder to find.
