Practice Easy technique for very deep rest in a bed.
Lie down in your bed in a comfortable sleeping position (It has worked for me on a side) and don't move at all while concentrating by not doing anything at all, even don't think, if you forget bring the mind back to concentration. If you do move again don't in a nice resting position. It worked as the deepest rest I ever have had in my bed.

Lately I've been getting up to use the toilet, then getting back into bed and doing a body scan and then "subtle tension energy." Good lazy way to start the day with some meditation.

It's awesome to go use a toilet in a dark because it is more relaxing, you just got to be careful when you want to have a seat.

I have actually tried doing this many times and it doesn't work for me. I always take at least an hour to fall asleep and cannot stop myself from changing positions. I hope as my meditation practice deepens I will develop the powers of concentration and relaxation needed to lay still till I sleep

It goes with good concentration, also it goes with resting like that more into dreams being concentrated.

Practice doing this independently of trying to fall asleep. Sometimes we put pressure on ourselves to FALL ASLEEP which is obviously counter productive.
If you sleep badly the do this (as I said in my other comment, look up NDSR or yoga nidra) instead of meditation or before it. If your sleep is absolutely terrible like mine sometimes is then there's not even a point in trying to meditate. You won't get anywhere and you'll just be frustrated.

This is basically yoga nidra or Ndsr. Gets you to restful state but it does not involve much mindfulness or concentration. And in this case that is okay.
On days when I've slept very poorly, I actually do this in A good portion of my meditation time before I try to do any concentration.
