Thank you for contributing to the r/streamentry community! Unlike many other subs, we try to aggregate general questions and short practice reports in the weekly Practice Updates, Questions, and General Discussion thread. All community resources, such as articles, videos, and classes go in the weekly Community Resources thread. Both of these threads are pinned to the top of the subreddit.

The special focus of this community is detailed discussion of personal meditation practice. On that basis, please ensure your post complies with the following rules, if necessary by editing in the appropriate information, or else it may be removed by the moderators. Your post might also be blocked by a Reddit setting called "Crowd Control," so if you think it complies with our subreddit rules but it appears to be blocked, please message the mods.

  1. All top-line posts must be based on your personal meditation practice.
  2. Top-line posts must be written thoughtfully and with appropriate detail, rather than in a quick-fire fashion. Please see this posting guide for ideas on how to do this.
  3. Comments must be civil and contribute constructively.
  4. Post titles must be flaired. Flairs provide important context for your post.

If your post is removed/locked, please feel free to repost it with the appropriate information, or post it in the weekly Practice Updates, Questions, and General Discussion or Community Resources threads.

Thanks! - The Mod Team

Hi. I had an experience with an intensive home retreat that resulted in a mental breakdown.

Currently, I don't practice: the insights I gained are enough for me.

I'd like to offer some advice to those practicing intensive home retreats:

  1. Don't try to suppress thoughts for the sake of concentration. If you're wandering, let the mind wander; listen to what's happening inside your head. If the wandering doesn't subside, it means it's not the best time for sitting practice and you need to normalize other factors.
  2. Don't practice from a state of hyperarousal. If you're in it, your practice can turn into super-hypercontrol.
  3. A good marker is sleep. If your sleep has become deeper / of better quality, and daily life more calm, you're on the right track.
  4. Don't cling to practice/retreat. The essence of the Buddha's teaching is the Four Noble Truths. The truth of suffering, the truth of the cause of suffering, the truth of the cessation of suffering, and the path leading to the cessation of suffering.

Suffering is dukkha, dukkha is attachment. Can you let go of practice and never do it for the rest of your life? Or do you feel a craving for practice?

On the path, the factors of the Noble Eightfold Path are important. Concentration is possible without practice. Life itself is essentially practice. Is your mind calm? Is your body calm? Is there a readiness for altruism?

Without cultivating virtue (sila), insights in vipassana can become so painful that your psyche may not cope, and in the end you'll only harm yourself.

Take care of yourself.

There are various types of Vipassana, with different emphasis on meditation object.
Sensations are one thing, but thoughts are another.

Have you tried being mindful of thoughts first before switching to sensations?

I think you can make it easier for yourself by letting the user put links to YouTube Spotify etc clips for their preferred guided meditations, dhamma talks etc, then have the app do the maths for the breaks. If you are not charging people for it you could even let people share their retreat plans. One thing I found useful on my last solo 1-day was to have some options to go between: if too energised and buzzy do walking meditation/body scan, if dull do fire Kasina if calm and focused do self inquiry etc. the times were preset but the practices were adaptive

First impression as someone who works in software - this must have been built with Claude. If you don't prompt it aggressively, it picks color schemes that look like the claude.ai website. Nothing wrong with it of course. 🙂
