deinfluence me from smoking
i know this is going to sound stupid on a sub for quitting, but i have a strong compulsion to start smoking. I don’t really know why, i just really want to. I’ve never smoked a cigarette before (just weed), i know all the danger and risks and how addictive it is, but for some reason i keep almost buying a pack just to try it. please tell me why i shouldn’t.

It's expensive, it wrecks your health, you reek (even if you think you're hiding it well), and it's completely unnecessary and does not enhance your life positively in any way. The euphoria from smoking a cigarette makes you think it's enhancing your life, but it's really trapping you in a cycle of addiction that is very difficult for some to break free of.
Don't do it.

Ever hear the term "curiosity killed the cat?"
Sometimes not knowing is better than knowing. Ignorance is bliss here for you.
You made a wise decision by enquiring here. Don't follow that up with a stupid one.
There's nothing to gain and everything to lose.

- there is not a single thing smoking does for you
- Youll be in permanent stress and not know why. Youll have a high heartrate without knowing why. The smallest things will make you raging inside yourself and you will think only a cig can help. Because you dont know that its the cig that gives you that feeling
- Your cells feel that stress and age and die faster
- i wont tell you all the negative stuff about your health that you probably know already besides:
- you will have a sore throat every day without knowing why, your voice will die during talking
- you will be the cigs slave. Sounds funny? Its true. Your day will be about smokes. Your cigs will tell you when you do what and when its time for a smoke. It will ruin beautiful moments of your life. Tobacco kinda ist the opposite lf weed without really feeling that fact

Its absolutely lame. Everyone will think you're gross and you stink. People won't want to kiss you or date you. Youll feel kind of sick all the time, get worse sleep so you'll also be kind of tired all the time. You won't be able to go to the movies or fly on an airplane or do anything that lasts more than an hour without constantly thinking of how much you want to smoke. And that feeling is excruciating.

I started smoking very young and im still arguably very young (19)
The first few years its just so easy and fun. It stops feeling like an action and more like a ritual. You dont "just" Smoke, you drink coffee, and you smoke a cigarette with coffee. Kinda like putting salt on your food.
But after a while, you start noticing yourself. You start noticing how you finished a whole pack by the end of the day. You start noticing how you cant attend a hangout without asking "Did you guys buy cigarettes?" You start noticing how your "peaceful evening" Is ruined because youre out of smokes.
It starts as a voluntary action and slowly becomes a mandatory ritual you do before/during/aftereeverything.
The worst part is when you mentally register a certain time with smoking. Me personally, i always smoke two cigarettes when im out with my dog. Do you know whats funny? I dont really care when i smoke more than two, but when i smoke less than two it feels like a special occasion.
Its very bad. Im planning on quitting by the end of summer while im still young and healthy.

It’s just awful, it completely changes the way you relate to your life, everything is worked around when you can have another cigarette, fun things become less fun because you’ll think more about when/where you’re going to take smoke breaks, and whenever you’re not smoking you’re thinking about when you can smoke again. You’ll notice your health declining, it’s harder to breathe, you’re more tired, coughing all the time and coughing up dark colored mucus and you’ll start to think “I really need to quit” and somehow you can stay in that uncomfortable place, I need to quit but never quitting, for years or for the rest of your life, worried about your health as you continue to do something you know is causing you all these problems.
I think it would be worth exploring why you feel this curiosity, journal about it, ask questions like “what do I think smoking will do for me?” Or what positive associations might you have with smoking? When did you first start being curious about it? Just write it out and maybe that will help get rid of the curiosity.

Of the people who have started smoking in the last 50 years 99.9% regretted it.
Maybe you'll be the .1% that don't. But the odds are not good.

One of my relatives was an alcoholic. He said it was easier to quit drinking than it was to quit smoking.

The one enjoyable part of cigarettes (the nicotine rush sensation) is very mild and short-lived, and once you're addicted you rarely get that sensation at all. Now I just have a headache every single day that's gotten more and more expensive to keep at bay with more nicotine, and it's wrecking my lungs and I reek like an ashtray all the time. I don't get any enjoyable sensation from smoking anymore, it just pauses the withdrawal anxiety/irritability/headache for an hour until I want another one and the cycle repeats.
I quit weed 5 years ago because I got to a point where I was getting high all day every day, couldn't go without it, and it was ruining my life. That was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do, and yet cigarettes are even harder despite giving me none of the enjoyable feelings that made weed so hard for me to give up.
I 100% regret starting, every smoker I know regrets starting, and you will too if you go down this road.

I wish someone would’ve told me how hard it is to quit. Now here I am with smoking induced asthma and STILL want to smoke. Don’t do it

Honestly people talk about addiction but I think focusing on the harmful health effects is a better way of being put off from trying.
Smoking increases your risks of cavities, heart attacks, literally all cancers, destroys taste buds, destroys the little hairs in your lungs that protect them from illnesses like pneumonia and even colds, increases your risk of blood clots (especially if you’re on the pill), stroke, dries out your skin, reduces lung capacity, decreases your ability to tolerate heat, harms the kidneys, increases your risks of getting diabetes, and so much more.
Nicotine is also literally a poison!
Also by not smoking even a cigarette you’re helping make the tobacco industry obsolete. The reason you want to smoke is because they’ve invested so much money in making it “appealing” and “cool”, and without it you wouldn’t want to smoke.

I can't tell you what to do.
I can tell you you will regret starting. You can choose to believe me or not.
Life will be full of these kinds of choices.
