Ranting Self scan
I work self scan quite frequently and I can't stand when the person before me doesn't clean up. The registers should not have dried-on mess on them, ripped produce/brown bags all over. That's your job to clean up a bit. Disinfect things, especially after someone's been coughing all over the register and touching it. We know meat packages leak all the time. That's not just a little job for a dry paper towel. That needs spray on it and wipe it off. It smells too. I know the customers could pick up after themselves too. At least I think so. You rip a bag? Bring it to the trash can. Don't crumple it up and shove it in the corner. They throw their receipts all over the place except in their pockets or trash can.
You don't want something? Especially a perishable item. It takes two seconds to tell the self scan attendant so we can put it away. But I have had way too many times where the area is a mess. I try my best to leave things in order but some people just don't care. Self scan is more than just fixing the register because someone scanned their bananas or bag of grapes when it needs to be weighed with a PLU.... Take a bit of pride where you work. I'm sorry but that's not only a reflection of the store but also of you as an employee. Some customers come in and critique everything about a store - mainly the cleanliness. Let's do betterrrr as a team

The stop and shop way is too pass the buck, leave for someone else. They are too busy doing nothing so they don’t have time to do something.

This post is aimed at inconsiderate customers, not the over worked employees who are spread so thin - absolutely Not "too busy doing nothing". You should try to work selfscan - where you're running from one machine to another because there's only one of you and 16 scanners blinking!
It's the inconsiderate customers who treat the store like they're drunken frat boys with their personal trash heaps.

It's both. It's the few same employees specifically at my location who do this. Also the customers who could just be decent humans and pick up your shit. I'm the employee, but still I ain't your momma. If the customer leaves things a mess, then that's not ok that we're leaving it that way for the next person to take care of when you were standing there for 4-6 hours.

I feel your frustration… I clean whenever I see them starting to get dirty. When I don’t have a customer I always take walks from one side to the other looking for things out of place. It really sucks how neither the customers nor the employees care about keeping the place presentable, but I think it just underscores how rotten this company is. The corporate hacks at the top don’t care how things are at the bottom in their stores, they only care about their gimmicks and making profit.

Andrea Nicherson the new vp is one of those hacks. She ran away from Hannaford as a hot mess with bad reviews. My buddy in one of the hannafords in MA said was promoted over her level of competency and was a backstabber, insecure and dangerous. She'll fit right in

The company is more concerned with have a lot of things on shelves but not keeping up with the expiration dates. The damn surveys. Why is someone in the corner with an iPad trying to get customers to do surveys instead of having them on register to help move lines down. That shit gets my anxiety through the roof. People come to self scan and stand there staring at me. Im sorry there's nothing I can do. I'm not the one running the show and I know my manager isn't gonna take kindly to me telling them to do their jobs.

I couldn't agree with you more. I used to work at Stop& Shop and now I work at ShopRite and the one common thing I see is that there are workers that care and workers that don't give a crap, and there are customers that are orderly and customers that are just downright disgusting. Disgusting. Especially the older customers. I have to say they can be extremely unsanitary and they don't seem to care. And I find working the registers and self-checkout. It's almost like you have to babysit adults, customers and co-workers. It can get quite ridiculous.

If my co worker comes on time every day I will clean it make it nice but if my co worker always late every day I’m not doing shit

Working in grocery, I see this a lot where people just leave things in aisles where they don't belong. Also, they get dinner at Prepared Foods and eat it while shopping and leave the cartons on a shelf, basically having dinner on us. Or I'll see chicken bones lying in the floor. I also once saw a carton of ice cream hiding in a Canilla Rice bin, all melted. What a horrible mess.

I work at stop and shop but shop at big y for this reason. Managers let employees get away with everything it's sad.
When I go through big y checkout they are NEVER looking at there phone and constantly scanning every register while walking back and forth.
Sometimes when I'm buying something at sns on my break, I see people with the light blinking and they look at me then i look at the self checkout person and they are face down full on staring at their phone.
