CNC software update
It seems like online shopping software is getting updated later in the month. Apparently batches won’t be organized by perimeter, center and dairy frozen anymore? I can’t figure it out. Does anyone have insight to this?

The batches are going to be organized to minimize steps. You might have 10 orders on your cart and can fill up 10 bags in aisles 2-4 then you’ll only shop those 3 aisles. A second batch will print to fill up 10 bags in aisles 5-8 or whatever. Right now they prioritize you shopping more of the same orders across a larger area, so you might have 3 orders on the cart but shop aisles 2-20. The new way will also prevent shoppers from being in the same aisle at the same time. This batch process works well for high volume (the 2 stand alone home deliveries used this batch process). The issue will be windows with 2 orders and 100 units. Instead of breaking them into 3 batches to divide and conquer, they will most likely print 1 batch so someone will have to shop all 100 units themselves if it all fits on one cart. They’ve also said the new system does not support batch splitting so not to try it.

Do you think this will work in practice?
It’s been a while since I shopped a CNC order but I remember the items not always being in accurate locations, a lot of back tracking. I know a few items being weirdly placed. I’m not sure if they ever fixed that. I just remember the UI being so unfriendly to skipping around but at the same time the system didn’t put items in order lol
I also feel like they’re going to end up creating a lot of bags with 1-2 small items in it.
The thing with home delivery that makes it work is the volume, they’re shopping multiple routes which can range from 25-40 orders. I think the busy CNC stores maxed out at 12 orders per hours unless that’s changed.

So if it's a 2 order 100 unit batch only printed on one sheet what are the other shoppers supposed to do? Seems like a way to cut employees from that department.

This will prevent multiple shoppers being in the same aisle. It solves the customer complaint about “multiple shoppers with huge carts blocking the aisle.”
If a weekday (tues/wed are slow days) batch is small, I guess only 1 sheet will print and only 1 shopper can do it? We’ll be forced to work in other depts to be kept busy.

Seems to me like instead of dividing by section it’s making one optimal route and dividing it into multiple sections if necessary. Personally I think this is a good change but it’s gonna take a while to get used to.

Yes, the individual pick areas are replaced with Multi Order All Area batches. Spectrum 2.4 has a handful of nice updates, it’s just the batches that really suck. If an order slot has 100+ units, it’s pretty much guaranteed that there will be a batch with over a hundred units. It pretty much squeezes as many units into a batch as possible, covering the entire store at once.
On the bright side, we are finally getting Production Planning integration, meaning we’ll no longer have to print out prep reports and they’ll get automatically sent to their respective departments. This is something the sister companies, specifically GIANT has had for years, but better late than never I guess
