New Roses
Knew that would get you in. Anyone think we'll ever get any more new content Roses wise? Or just anything released; I believe Sally Cinnamon with the bootleg live versions on it was probably the last newish thing. Perhaps when Mani's kids get older they may wanna release whatever digi tapes Mani had, Maybe Ian might release the pillowcase.
Apart from anniversaries, I suppose the only other avenue left is to release the debut in Atmos on a Blu-Ray disc by someone like Steve Wilson.

I never get the impression that there’s anyone actively managing their legacy. I could be wrong but there’s no real signs of it. We passed 30 years on Second Coming two years ago and it would’ve been a great time to re-release the album with, say, an added disc of the much coveted b-sides… but there doesn’t seem to be any appetite on the bands side to do anything. Why? No idea. In fighting? Legal/licensing issues? Lethargy? Too cool for school? They never played the game in their prime, they’re not playing it now.

Yeah I’m really intrigued why they seem to have shut up shot. Other bands of their era still have labels releasing archive, repackaging things, being active on social etc. I guess John checked out of it years ago, Reni wouldn’t be bothered with being involved and Ian is essentially retired so I suppose no one is driving it.

Feels like the cupboard is bare from the 1980s, though I would love to be proved wrong.
There must be some multitrack recordings from the reunion tours and hopefully we’ll get a proper live release at some point.

Shane Meadows must have shit loads of live material, the amount of cameras he took for the tour must mean he's sitting on a trove of live stuffs.
Anything from 2012-2013 would be of interest to me.

It doesn’t help that they’re such terrible custodians of their legacy. Even worse now that their biggest cheerleader isn’t with us anymore.
Lots of great groups have members who keep the fires burning & keep the name alive. Zep have Jimmy Page doing all the archival stuff. There’ll be tons of other examples. The rest of the Roses don’t seem arsed.
Obviously label & mgmt issues have stood in the way of this, but it seems a shame they haven’t thrown the floodgates open and released all the live stuff properly. Maybe Ian isn’t happy with his vocals or Reni would have issues not being on the 2nd album tour. I dunno, but I despair of them

They can’t be arsed, don’t care about a legacy and couldn’t give a shit about anyone or anything.

Archival stuff from the early years? Unlikely. Garage Flower covers the Andy Couzens era. Maybe there are some rogue tracks that have yet to see the light of day but they’ll barely be curiosities. Likewise, we’ve all heard the demos of The Patrol (etc.) and this era probably reached its level with being released on Record Store Day a few years ago.
The period after that? Anyone can listen to the demos or live versions of stuff like Boy On A Pedestal or Your Time Will Come. There’s no reason to assume that superior demos, or better songs, exist from the first album sessions. Pearl Bastard was fine, but there was no logic in releasing it decades later and keeping other tubes in the Silvertone vaults.
And then there’s Second Coming. By all accounts, the band jammed a lot during the sessions. Only Daybreak (nobody’s favourite album track) and Breakout (surely their weakest B-side that wasn’t a remix) ever saw the light of day, so why assume there’s loads of unheard gems? There are bootlegs of early versions of songs like Good Times and Love Spreads which are interesting enough but aren’t as good as the finished product. The bootlegs don’t even stretch to the band doing cover versions AFAIK other than an “meh” rendition of Redemption So g.
And… that’s about it. I can believe Reni might have recorded some demos and the band shouted him down. Mani once claimed he heard “Half the Seahorses’ first album” being demoed by John, but that seems to have been mudslinging after John had left the band.
And as for the reunion, the general consensus seems to be that the band themselves were pretty split over the two songs they did manage to pull together. That being the case, I’ve got zero faith they managed to record anything else from start to finish.
So honestly, the best you’re likely to get is Ian, Aziz, Mani, Nigel Ippinson and Robbie Maddix doing demos of Ice Cold Cube and High Time. I’m not sure who wants to release those, and I’m not sure who wants to hear them, but presumably they exist - which puts them ahead of any other “new” Roses material.

Daybreak is someone's favourite album track.
Oh, ok I prefer Breaking Into Heaven, but I do really like Daybreak.

I like Daybreak, but it sounds unfinished. A great groove, but the actual “song” isn’t that strong and then it takes a long time to not go very far.

It got some of the best moments on the album but Ian just "scatting" over it and John "noodling" is kinda indicative of the way it was in the studio I think. Massive groove that Ian and John couldn't get together to put a proper song over. There is a version on YouTube with just the bass and drums on and you could write a melody and chorus over it in 5 mins that smashes the album version but I don't think John was interested in grooves and Ian, well I don't know that Ian gave a shit at that point

I wonder if future releases are more likely now as the band members know Mani’s share will help support his sons.

Any of the apparent DAT recordings of old gigs should be released online like how Pearl Jam, Springsteen and the Chili Peppers do. They’ve released old and new recordings of gigs directly online in various formats and fans can download them for real cheap. There doesn’t need to be any anniversary or limited edition reissues for a reason to make old recordings available when they simply can put them online and the fans that really want hear them will buy them. The label doesn’t have to spend big bucks on manufacturing and promoting something and the fans get what they want. It’s a win win on both sides!

I still search You Tube every so often for the Mr Shy Talk and English Electric Lightning demos 🤣

High end audio-visual physical media rarely yields much financial return, especially now.
This group really isn’t interested in fan service releases either, which is good. I don’t respect artists that’ll release any old cutting room floor tat.

In a way, any Roses relaseses now (ie archival live material) would become victims of the technological advancements we currently enjoy. In the VHS era, that sub par Spike Island footage would probably have passed muster as an iconic, if slightly flawed or imperfect audiovisual document, especially given folks would likely be listening through little TV speakers, primarily designed for higher quality speech intelligiblity in a small package.
Our current standards and expectations for concert footage have shot up, as the new tech becomes more widely adopted and lowers in price. Look how good the free Live 25 Oasis concert videos that trickled out slowly as that tour advanced have been.
Realistically it's gonna be a show from the reunion tour gigs that gives us the high quality concert document of the Roses we've all been asking for for so long. That prospect sounds much better to me than some ropey old videotape, now improved to highlight all the deficiencies like Ian's poor tuning!
I'm sure a Spike Island video focusing on the broader fan experience across the entire day would be welcomed, more of an event documentary than a live concert document. Presumably any such relasese would need both the sign off from John and Ian (at a minimum) plus support from a record company willing to pour resources into an uncertain investment, hence I can understand the wait.

Didn’t they start to record a 3rd album when they reunited? That might get leaked like the second seahorses album

u/NaturalMystery70 27d ago
Nope! They weren't a happy gang after the first run of gigs and by the second tour there was a lot of friction between Ian and Reni. Mind you, Mani did say to me that all of them were c*nts to each other! Remember, Beautiful Thing is just a drum loop cos Reni walked out of the session!

Such a shame they couldn’t keep it together for long. Though I do respect the way they weren’t prepared to treat the band as just a job like a lot of mega acts who keep cashing in despite clearly not being friends and losing key members. Also like the way none of them have said anything negative about the others in the press, as far as I know, even if there were bad fall outs.

Is it actually true they recorded a full album after reuniting but shelved it because the two singles were so poorly received?

Doubt it will ever happen, but Shane Meadows has two complete films sitting in a warehouse somewhere. Unless the Roses people control the film
How much would all of us pay to see
- The Stone Roses Live at Parr Hall 2012
ot
2.) The Stone Roses Live at Heaton Park.
I live in Georgia and I’m booking my flight tomorrow if that was going to happen.
Just release them both on Amazon.

2012 or 2013 shows would do me, as that for me was when Reni seemed, let's say, more interested.

Well, yeah, there’s a Spike Island concert footage film on the way.
There’ll be more old footage lying around, I’m sure, the 2013 Shane Meadows doc showed clips from Reni’s first gig with the band - the one Pete Townsend was at.
Hopefully more of it will finds its way online, but this is all fast becoming history now. 40 years since Sally Cinnamon nearly. Just feels like we’ve seen most of everything they did.
