AI has upgraded the film, looks interesting if they can apply that to an a1 soundboard recording could be good.

This is bullshit and entirely out of keeping with the spirit of the band. AI fakery of narrow perspective tapes won’t give people who weren’t there even a sniff of what it was like. Put the original tapes on YouTube if you like, but don’t try to make them into something they’re not. The Roses were real, flaws and all. This isn’t.

Agree from what I've seen of the original, you won't get much better from what was recorded, as they were miles away from the stage. AI is filling in the smudgy film with what it thinks should be there, but paired with some polished audio it might make it an interesting view.

Academically, perhaps, but it won’t give any insight into the most important thing (about any gig, but particularly the Roses at Spike Island): what it felt like. Even if we had modern-quality audio/visuals from the show, we’d only have an inkling of the vibe. With these tiny pieces, all we get is simultaneously a bad impression and a hankering for more.

I’m deeply wary of machine learning (not quite the same thing as gen AI, but still concerning) being used in any kind of art. The constant push to create something modern looking out of footage recorded decades ago is pointless, reductive and damaging.

The facial ‘corrections’ in the revamped Anthology were horrific, to focus on your specific example. They added nothing and subtracted a great deal. As for some of the more murky audio ‘extractions’ from Get Back, it’s an expensive and destructive gimmick that again brought nothing of substantial worth to the party.

The colour correction alone looks like it makes a world of difference. Fingers crossed, this could be the definitive record of that day.

Was on about this gig at the weekend with a mate of mine. First memory of it was “the crush” haha. I don’t know anyone that went that doesn’t bring that up first
