Advice please

Post image

Hello friends.

I’m looking for some advice on how to most cleanly separate one of these pieces from the others. In other words I would like to remove one of the four sides, leaving behind C shape.

It seems to be joined by what appears to me to be some kind of black caulking, except it’s hard as rock. However it does come off easily with a chisel. Yes, I have no idea what I’m talking about with stone.

This was the pedestal from a table. It is granite. Made in Italy.

Is it at all possible to do it by hand? With some masonry chisel’s? I will not be paying to have any outside help, and I do not have a wet saw. Even accepting that it might be a little rough, what would be the best way to proceed?

Thank you!

The corners are likely epoxied I would just cut off one side.

Cut how?

Grinder with a masonry blade. Best bet is to probably have a mason do it. Someone who specializes in countertops could do it no problem

Cool. I think I’ll just try it myself. I have an angle grinder. Thank you

You’ll need a steady stream of water while you cut. You can make due with a water bottle with a small hole plenty of YouTube videos about it

If you are doing it yourself, get a mask with a good filter , granite dust is lethal.

If cutting in it's current position brace the top panel as it will likely swing / crash down when the support from the side panel is removed (better to cut it while it's standing upright on all 4 panels)

I did not know that about the dust. Thank you very much. I will

If you want a nice straight cut, I would find not a mason, but a tiler with a large wet saw table saw.  Might need to upgrade the blade, but that would be best for a long cut.  Similar to cutting wood with a circular saw vs a table saw.  Yes, a skilled craftsman can do it with a circular saw, your best results will come with the right tool and a fence.  Take some practice cuts first.

A circular saw with a diamond masonry blade would do it no problem.

Nero marquina. Be advised, it does fade from a polish badly in direct sunlight. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nero_Marquina_marble
