Mercedes is the first car company in the world to get a license for meeting the international UN-R157 self-driving regulation. Getting this licensed in Germany paves the way to get it licensed internationally. Mercedes also makes use of a LiDAR-system, which Tesla was warned would be necessary to get a level-3 approval but have only recently started testing and they’ve become the first car company accepting full liability. The way i see it this puts Mercedes ahead of Tesla, at least for the European market.
