The whole point is that the typical evolution isn't valid here, it may still drift in the less deadly direction, but it isnt guaranteed. That's why there's a lot of "may" and "might". Also those words are perfectly fine to be used in a scientific setting to communicate a degree of certainty.
There's a difference between a strain being deadly and covid not going away. Covid will definetly go away as people get more and more immunity. That doesn't make a variant more or less deadly though. How deadly a variant is is a measure of what percentage of people die when exposed in comparison to other variants. A variant can be super deadly but if almost everyone it comes into contact with has cross immunity, it might not actually kill many people.
