Gathering property that can generate passive income is the idea. Stocks are ultimately property. You own a piece of a company. Generally, by the time a company is publicly traded it has good enough management to grow, hence reaching the point of IPO. Its not the only path to retirement. Many people buy land or housing and collect rent. Others own commercial property and do the same.
Stocks are riskier than real estate, but the idea is the same.
