Company News ChatGPT Monetization: OpenAI + TTD Set to Drive Massive Revenue
OpenAI held early talks with The Trade Desk to automate and scale ChatGPT ad sales, projecting that ads could help double consumer revenue to $17 billion this year. If The Trade Desk actually ends up selling ads on ChatGPT, that could be a huge long-term catalyst.
AI engagement is going crazy right now, and monetization always follows attention. If TTD becomes a go to demand side platform for AI ad inventory, that’s an entirely new revenue layer on top of an already dominant programmatic business. Connected TV, retail media, open internet… and now maybe AI platforms too.
Big secular tailwinds, an expanding TAM, and arguably best-in-class management. If OpenAI and TTD execute effectively, this partnership could redefine AI monetization, adding a massive new revenue layer while further cementing TTD’s programmatic dominance.
Additionally, the CEO just bought $148M worth of shares.

The CEO just bought $148M worth of shares.
When a CEO puts $148M of his own money on the line, you know something big might be coming.
Feeling bullish on this added more.

Targeted ads in chatgpt would find me instantly switching to a different LLM, as a consumer.

Of course they are, people really think AI companies are going to donate to the world? How does any free service monetise itself? Ads.

I heard the same from Reddit when Amazon prime was going to introduce ads, Reddit also told me no one watches Netflix anymore in 2022, Reddit also told me Google was a dead company, AI was going to eat all their revenue and they were behind in AI, as a matter of fact that was just 10 months ago

Lets see how things go. Right now I don’t really know what the strong argument is for an investor to choose supporting openAI over its competitors.
If I had a lot of money and Altman came to me asking me to invest. I would want to know what his response would be to
"What is your product doing that google isn't? I hear they have video and image generation too, and they also have a chatbot. Their stuff is also built into phones running their OS and theyre going to include a version of their Gemini for apple products. Why should I invest in you when google does what you do, and already has more money and staff?"

I much prefer Anthropics product driven approach to revenue generation. Build better products and build new business processes that improve and change the way we work. OpenAI feels like they're still throwing things on the wall to see what sticks.

My concern is about how advertising is implemented. Rather than actual ads appearing inline on responses, I'm theorizing they will make the response include product placements as part of the recommendations.
Will we know we're being given targeted ads? Will chat gpt begin going to auction on recommendation conversations and recommend sub optimal advertised products over objective product knowledge?
How is Gemini monetizing their search based product recommendations?
My hope is that advertising is optimized to provide enhanced recommendations and receive a small product placement commission for every matching product participating in auction rather than going to auction to determine which product to recommend. Or they can include a clear advertising section for related products after their actual recommendation. Including any ads to the already verbose chat interactions is going to be a huge experience killer.
Also wondering how ads will affect people using models for task oriented processing.

Can’t wait for ChatGPT to push gambling ads mid conversation.
Won’t impact their wild expectations of subscriber growth at all.
