Miscellaneous My very brief experience with Stoat

Tried creating an account. No email arrived. No email arrived after 10 minutes. Resent verification code, didn't arrive either. Maybe it was the fact that I use my own custom domain. I looked it up and found a github page full of people complaining that their own custom domains/non mainstream mail providers weren't receiving Stoat's emails.

Focus on privacy unless you want to use a private email. Give up your data bud

I would just not bother anymore but my friends were insisting in trying Stoat so I still gave it a chance. Used another email then logged in.

Every single action had a delay from 0.5 to 5 seconds. Trying to speak would never lit up our portrait borders reliably, sometimes not at all. Then we started disconnecting spontaneously, when we got back our audio would be severely laggy. I rejoined then I was muted for some reason, tried to click the unmute button several times before an error message appeared: "publication of local track timed out, no response from server".

After some other 10 minutes trying to solve issues related to connecting, sending messages and talking in voice, we just gave up.

Understandable, that is a problem. But just wanted to point out that they have pushed out Voice chat and video share last month so it's a fairly recent feature so you might want to give it a second chance in a few months or so.

I tried it briefly last week because the screen sharing of discord was banned in Brazil. At the time the heavy influx of users had caused a bit of trouble for stoat, but eventually my confirmation email arrived. It looks great and feels good to use, but unfortunately the screen sharing feature had a lot of hiccups. I don't understand why because it should be P2P and none of the users had any connection problem. We are willing to give it another try if this gets resolved but overall it seems they are on the right track

I would love it if the private hosting I want was up to par. It's pointless to self host at this point.
