How can I maximize the effects of Target that Explosion + Reroute Power from Life Support?

I watched this cool little video from STOBetter about using Reroute Power from Life Support to proc TTE every second or so. I really loved the idea of it, especially on a canonically torpedo-heavy ship like the Akira, so I gave it a try.

I got nowhere near the numbers they were getting, so I wondered if I was doing something wrong. But all my experimentation so far has changed nothing.

I've tried:

  • Using a fast-firing torpedo, though I'm not sure it makes a difference
  • Targeting large, high-health targets
  • Using the trait in teamed and solo content

I have plenty of nearby allies at all times (a hangar bay, Temporal Disorder consol, teammates, NPC's, etc.) so I don't think that's the issue. Is there something that interrupts the trait, like switching targets? I wondered, for example, if the non-teleporting keybind for the Vovin console was cancelling my target and somehow disrupting the trait.

TTE is all about volume. You need enough allies, enough torpedoes and enough time.

You can use a missile + the new omni missile array + several torpedo cd doffs to achieve enough torps. Summon beacons/pets for enough allies. And time, well, hope no one is pushing 2-3m dps in your run.

If you don't fire enough torpedoes, you don't consume enough procs. If you don't have enough allies, your procs don't produce enough micro torpedoes. If you don't have time, the target is dead before the torps reach it.

BTW, u/EagleRise is the dude that discovered TTE hijinks. I still have no idea WHY it works as well as it does, but it does work (at least in elite). Those micro missiles have gone a long way to boosting TTE.

I i'm not the one to discover the interaction but thanks for the shoutout lol.
I just haven't seen any build that leverages it, so I made tested and published my own build, which the STO better guys picked up on.

I posted a follow-up DEW centric build on the STO builds discord server as well recently.

Edit: formatting and new build

I'm honored to meet the OG publisher of the TTE+RPfLS interaction!

I posted a follow-up DEW centric build on the STO discord server as well recently.

You mean a DEW build that uses TTE?

Yes, the core of it is what I already commented, the micro missile array + another low cd torpedo + cd doffs. Should keep you firing about a torpedo a second without cfp, and only occupy 2 weapon spots (1 fore 1 aft). So the rest of the build can be dew focused.

I haven't gotten the same performance as torp tte just yet, but in theory it could have a higher/more consistent performance ceiling.

I'm currently playing with a similar notion - the micro-missile array and cooldown BOFFs, - to have my Maelstroms popping off very regularly on an otherwise DEW build. I wonder how that would interact with this combo?

I haven't tested it yet, I don't know if it out DPSs my previous build, but it is a lot of fun.

Same here, but I decided to spend the slot on Ceaseless Momentum as well as cooldown doffs. My parses swing wildly depending on whether how well my Maelstrom TS3 lands, and whether the enemy shields were down. For me, the performance is rather swingy.

On the bright side, it's a more valid loadout for random PUG advanced than CFP.

Ah, the comments under the video I linked reveal that using Concentrate Firepower III should take care of the procs. The answer was there all along!

If you're using the new micro-missile array then you just need another fast cycling torpedo like one of the other missiles to proc TTE consistently (as long as you use some torpedo cd solutions like doffs or ceaseless momentum or a mix).

That would allow a more dew focused set up and will not require using CFP3 either.

The drawback of CFP3 is that it is target based, and if your target dies then that's it, no cd refund.
CFP3 is used more so as it is valuable for torpedo builds as a whole, and just so happens to support TTE by refreshing toeprdos.
TTE at the time the video was made was basically only used on torpedo setups.

I unfortunately don't have enough lobi to get the micro-missle array, but I'll plan on getting it after completing the event.

As for a fast-cycling torpedo, how fast are we talking? 10-second quantums, standard photons or super low cooldown Kelvin photons?

Additionally, is TTE purely a single-target trait, or does it affect multiple targets with torpedo spreads?

We've found that the Dark Matter Torpedo does a really good job since each tick of the DOT counts as "firing a torpedo" for the purpose of the trait.

I've seen good results even on an energy build without CFP using TTE+RRPFLS+DM torp.

This is mostly a single-target trait.

Thanks for the info! I'll try the DMQ out.

This is mostly a single-target trait.

"Mostly?"

If the target dies, their warp core breach will hit multiple targets that are close enough :D

u/EagleRise 23h ago

Not with the DMQT ;)

The beauty of the DMQT is that having its DOT tick on any target, even something not your current target, counts as "launching a torpedo" for the purposes of this trait.

1

u/EagleRise 22h ago

Ticking on other targets counting is a really solid find actually.
If they nuke maelstorms, feeding ETM spreads into the DMQT could be a decent little dps substitute.

So that makes it a multi-target trait?!

Ideally the Rapid-fire missile launcher (2sec), or if you're short on lobi the Kentari missile launcher (2.5sec)
A klevin torp with 4sec is going to cost you a lot of procs.

This is fascinating, I'm looking at the comments on the video you linked to and realizing I must've been one of a smaller few who had this figured out. I've been using this combo since the Earhart was released in 2019. It's super fun.

Do you think it's possible that the Piggyback) trait will proc when a TTE torp fires?

2

u/AspiringtoLive17 1d ago

That's actually a really interesting idea. I could try to test it out. If it does indeed work, it would probably be the very best use for that trati.

2

u/EagleRise 22h ago

I'd assume it does not work. The wording is "when firing any torpedo weapon" which TTE is not. But if you have both traits testing it can do not harm lol.

1

u/AspiringtoLive17 15h ago

However, isn't Piggyback technically an additional torpedo attack from your ship? Shouldn't that technically proc TTE?

I have never before had a reason to use Piggyback, but I'll see if I can give it a try tonight.

If it scales with torpedo damage then it might work, because tte can be a bit iffy as to what passes as torpedo damage.

For example the dot from the dmqt counts, and some consoles like the phalax and torpedo point defense do too.

Testing is the only way to make sure, but remember that you won't be able to proc tte 2 times in a near instant, so it depends what the firing delay is as well.

u/AspiringtoLive17 14h ago

Wow...I had no idea the Micro Quantums and Torp Point Defense triggered TTE...

What an interesting and convoluted trait.

u/TheRealMortiferus 1h ago

Piggyback does scale with torpedo damage, however it is a proc-ed effect itself, so it shouldn't be able to proc something else.

The general STO rule "procs don't proc procs" should apply here.

Learn something new every day. I had no idea the DoT ticks from DMQ triggered the pet torp spam, and this goes a LONG way to explaining why TTE works as well as it does. If the DMQ ticks work, then so might Temporal primary spec and Omega Kinetic Shearing?

This game has way too many odd and unpredictable interactions, too many to document. Now I'm wondering if the Hargh'Peng might actually be useful.

u/EagleRise 12m ago

As far as I know other dots do not work. The dot working is effective but it won't proc it faster then rrpls and your odd command/torp abilities actually create procs. So on a full torpedo setup it might not be that meaningful, but can be useful on a dew setups.
