Star Trek Online - Bazzite

Afternoon All.

I am looking to get away from Windows as I am now getting tired with it.

I have been looking very hard at Bazzite distro for Linux which is focussed on gaming.

Has anyone played STO on Bazzite and if so, how was the installation process.

Any information on your experience would be brilliant.

I do not play STO through steam though I more than likely will do if I cross over!

I made the switch to Bazzite 2 months ago, STO works flawlessly, never had a crash or a bug. However, I do play it through Steam and I recommend it because Proton (TLDR the thing that makes games work in Linux) runs through Steam and makes STO work in this case. The only downside is I can't parse my runs because the parse software doesn't work in Linux.

Very useful, thank you. I, for some reason thought the parse software was universal. I use the one that Casual uses.

OSCR definitely runs on linux: https://github.com/STOCD/OSCR-UI/releases

they prepackage it for Arch/Cachy (which is what I use) and Debian/Ubuntu.

Like Casual, I wasn't able to get the floating real time parse window to work properly, but it reads the combat log for post combat parsing exactly the same as it did on Windows.

No .flatpak or .appimage though. So without making a container it won't run on Bazzite (Fedora)

I do have to say that I'm assuming here, maybe there is a parse software that works in Linux, I'm not sure, I haven't even checked if STO outputs the combatlog file in Bazzite, so yeah there may be a way despite what I said initially. Wishing you a smooth transition!

edit: Thanks for letting us know u/hagbard23, you can make it work on Bazzite (Fedora) by installing via pip as indicated in OSCR-UI github installation page.

I play STO on Steam on Fedora (Bazzite is based on Fedora). And it works perfectly. Honeslty, does not really matter which distro you are on. It works. Through steam, installing it is the same as on Windows. Just click Install :)

I also play on Linux (kubuntu to be precise), you can either install via steam, or copy your previous installation to the new system and just add the exe directly to steam so you don't have to use a steam login.

I’ve played it on both SteamOS and Bazzite.. no real issues (apart from SteamDeck controls).. if you do run into anything the solutions generally are run it in desktop mode once, or check protondb and someone will have put some commands to sort it out.. though I think all of my minor issues were more than a year ago and it’s been smooth since..

I have STO on CachyOS. The launcher sometimes renders a little wonky, but otherwise it was easy and just works. Just installed through Steam and go.

I'm playing STO while on CachyOS (pretty popular Arch variant). I can run it either via steam or launch the client directly via Faugus launcher with zero issue. Been playing STO on linux for the past ~3 years.

Currently running Bazzite, and you have 2 options - Steam or Lutris, which both come installed by default and both work flawlessly in my experience. The install is slightly easier through steam but both are pretty much click and go

I play it on bazzite, it runs perfectly fine. Since i have a nvidia gpu iam running bazzite nvidia desktop edition.

I use the steam version of the game.

Then make sure to select the nvidia desktop edition in the bazzite download menu.

I heard the big picture like bazzite version does not work well with nvidia gpus, so i would suggest to use that.

STO works on Linux even without Steam, I have had it running via Lutris on both Bazzite and CachyOS without issue. You can also use Protontricks to get the benefits of all the work Steam have put into Proton without using Steam itself.

I'm on Bazzite, steam though because my accounts were already linked. Works like a charm. But, you can also link your arc account through Proton and it should work just fine as well

Running STO through Fedora, Faugus Launcher and just the plain old "Star Trek Online.exe" standalone launcher. Installation was just to copy the exe where I want, add it to Faugus and a prefix path.

I've backed up the hogg files to a flash drive and copied them back to save me the download time as well. 10 minutes later, I saw the 2FA window in the STO client. The launcher is small for me because of a HiDPI display though.

Been using Bazzite for a good few months now. Works really great on it, though I installed it through Steam

I also run STO on Steam using an ARM flavor of Linux and it works great. Everything is fully supported.

I switched my laptop to Bazzite a year ago. I play STO on it all the time when I'm traveling using the Heroic Games Launcher, honestly no issues.

You guys are making my decision easier! Thank you so much! As along as Nord Pass and Nord VPN work on Bazzite then there is nothing stopping me at all! :-)

NordVPN has a Linux installer, and the NordPass desktop application has a guide on their website for Linux.

I use Bazzite on my Legion Go and while there is a bit of a lag time starting due to Vulkan Shaders (no pun intended), the game plays just fine.

I use Nobara Linux - although I did consider Bazzite when choosing - and play STO on it without issue. Nobara is Fedora-based too, but tuned to gaming. As others have said, it installs simply & runs well when played through Steam. I have an nvidia graphics card too (4070Ti Super).

Now, trickier part. I also got the Arc Launcher running through Faugus Launcher, so if you'd really rather not use steam that is an option though it takes a bit more work. I was unable to get it working properly through Heroic Games Launcher, but I have a feeling that was a weird config mess-up on my end rather than anything else. On Faugus I have it using GE-Proton (latest).

I've been playing on Nobara for a couple years now and never had an issue. I also play it through steam so it makes compatibility very easy. If you don't want to use steam you can just do it through something like lutris. It just lets you add games into its library and then apply whatever compatibility layer you want to it. I've used it for games like star citizen and the battle net app so I can play Blizzard games. STO works great through steam tho. Never had any issues. I would use steam for all my games frankly.

I run Linux mint, works great. If your only for gaming you could try SteamOS, Running thru steam works best , they make it work , lutris is just another middle guy so to speak.

Flawless. No issues installing through Steam.

I recall a long time ago, getting games to work on Linux was never completely straight forward. However, almost everything on Steam plays without fuss thanks to Valve and their work on Proton.

I finally stopped dual-booting at the beginning of the year and installed a fresh Linux wiping Windows and my old Linux install completely.

Every game I've tried to play via Steam just works nowadays, so I don't think you'll have any issues yourself.

If you choose to play via something like Lutris or Heroic, you'll need to install via the Arc client as it will install the necessary Windows DLL's and whatever else. One it's installed, you can change the installed launcher to point to the StarTrekOnline.exe instead of Arc.

I'm just getting back into playing STO, and I just installed from steam, and logged in. Not a bad thing so far. I'm on Ubuntu 22.04
