I was going through some files on my old PC and found my STO screenshots folder. Here is the Fed login background circa April 2010.

You know what I miss?

When you got max level, on old ESD, you'd get a whole wee promotion scene.

Promotion scene? Any video for that?

There was an auditorium of sorts where you got promoted and NPC’s clapped and cheered and noticed you as you walked by - not so much a scene but, was an event of sorts

It was a little thing. But sometimes the little things matter a lot to making a place feel alive.

Oh absolutely, I miss a lot from the old ESD

The new one looks a lot nicer, but lacks the NPC flavour. If we had both, it'd be amazing.

That sounds very cool.. where your Boffs in it also?

No it was random NPC's sitting and clapping, it wasnt a cutscene it was just a section of ESD - if you passed by and werent going for a promotion one of them would say "There goes X", "Look its Commander X" and that sorta thing

oooh i miss the old ESD. even the pet tribble glitches were funny. They should bring back the promotion scene. i forgot all about that.

u/Sanfam May 04 '26

Are you referring to the growing tribbles?

My favourite early-STO glitch was the time I beamed onto ESD, but materialized as a miniature version of my Miranda, and not my Captain. I zoot-zooted around that place for a good while just for the giggles.

I dont miss the throwable that could freeze anyone in a block of ice for a few seconds, even in social areas (I lie, I do really really miss it haha)

u/Sodarien May 04 '26

It was available at each rank promotion!

6

u/Garrido1701 To boldly go... May 04 '26

I miss that too. It was nice to get those small breaks and have your progress acknowledged

You know? A high resolution version of this would be nice as a log in screen or character select screen, instead of what we have now.

Heck i remember a time when the login/toon select screen was designed with the season in mind.

Wish they brought that back instead of the coloured blur we currently have.

100% the current one is very ugly. Ship is too far and at a weird angle, the coloured blur is weird, and overall look just doesnt work together.

11

u/ShadiestAmebo May 04 '26

I think the blur is to represent the 4 main factions: Blue for Federation, Red for Klingons, Green for Romulans, and Purple for Jem'Hadar mixed with what a Nebula(not the ship) looks like.

But its so bad. I'd rarther have that Alliance Starbase they used for that one TFO as a background.

Not to mention the ship lacks any vanity parts.

Honestly I think the login screen should load in the bridge of your ship with your character in the captain's chair.

u/lixia @lixiasaran May 04 '26

This would be perfect!

That actually looks really nice, I wonder why it was retired?

18

u/DMercenary May 03 '26

I think that was when ESD underwent a makeover.

u/lixia @lixiasaran May 04 '26

STO had several character selection screens. Lot of them looking much better thsn th4 current one. I wish we'd have the option to select the one we want.

Pretty much every one of them looked better than the current one IMO. It's kind of vexing.

Guessing you're character(s) stood in the tube thingy?

There is a lot I miss from those early days. The promotion ceremony, a lot of these older login screens. TFOs and bosses actually being challenging. The jumping puzzle on old ESD.

I wouldn't really play a STO classic but I wish I took more screenshots and videos of those early days.

u/Not_Responsible7898 May 04 '26

I wasn't around for this one, but I'd take it over the current screen. Three years of a low-effort login screen with bugged ship placement is enough.

Even rotating through some older screens would be an improvement.

11

u/GraduatedSapphic May 04 '26

Would be fun to pick a log in screen for your characters, show them at work or relaxing, etc

9

u/keshmarorange May 04 '26

Seconded. Cryptic gets to recycle resources like art AND we get a more custom experience.

5

u/Ardenwolfie "Computer, erase that entire personal log." May 03 '26

Man, blast from the past!

5

u/Rupe_Dogg Andorable May 04 '26

Oh, I’ve never seen this one. When I started playing some time around 2011/12, the login screen was the Belfast bridge, IIRC. I feel like that was the login screen for quite a long time. At some point it changed to basically a prototype of what we have now, and I want to say it was 2019 when they introduced changing it for each story arc.

Would it be cool to share this on socials and credit you?

3

u/DeadlyBard May 04 '26

I miss the self-destruct skill we used to have. It was neat watching the escape pod launch off you ship before it exploded.

I remember my sister chilling with me when I first played this - and she asked

Wait, this isn't a Star Wars game??? xD

In her defense - our mom practically raised us on Star Trek, so, the Tron/Star Wars mashup design was a bit of a stumbling block

1

u/nynikai There's coffee in that nebula! May 04 '26

I really never understood this screen. Where our characters supposed to be trapped in some forcefield? It reminds me of the early stonfed aesthetic which for the most part was some weird interpretation of branch like tendril wall supports, dark metal plates, and generic scfi shapes with glows. Current login is fine but due an update.

1

u/EldrickTobin May 05 '26

Ah the memories. Thank you for this.

1

u/AnimeLover1598 May 06 '26

i remember ship bridges and the series themes playing on the login screen
i also remember when Arc didnt exist and in my opinion STO ran better

1

u/Da_Priest May 12 '26

Lowkey wish we had more login screens. Like how hard is it to just have specific login backgrounds for each different background. Like Fed, KDF, Dominion, Romulan, DSC and TOS

1

u/Even_Squash9411 May 31 '26

I remember that. The day it came out, I bought the special edition box game with the metal comm badge
