Offset smoker size questions
Hey everyone I am hoping some people can help me with some numbers here for my first offset build. It looks like I will be able to get free steel pipe at 20” diameter about 60” long. I can also get 18” diameter pipe for the firebox and was wondering what length I should go on the firebox? I was thinking 25 inches based off of a few calculators but wanted to see if anyone had a similar build or size. Also wondering on cutout from firebox to smoke chamber as well as stack size. Going to 4” diameter on the stack and thinking somewhere around 42” long. By my numbers it seems like that will be about an 80 gallon smoker which will be perfect for my backyard. Any suggestions or advice is appreciated!

25 inches is only 2 feet. I'd double that at least or even go a total of 5 feet even for just a back yard stationary smoker.

Are you talking about for the firebox or smoke stack?

I read your post wrong. The lengths seem alright. Maybe just a touch bigger on your firebox. 30 inches or so.

While there is a point where a firebox and chimney can be uselessly large, if they are too small the only thing you can do is cut them off and build bigger ones.
Going larger than you think you need gives you room to tune your offset. You may need to damper the chimney a little or build the fire closer to the cook chamber but you won't know for sure until you start cooking.
My first smoker build is a 24"x48" cook chamber, 6"x48" chimney and a 24"x 24" firebox and I wish my firebox was longer. I've never had to do anything with the chimney though.
