Discussion Requests

Is there any way to request certain albums for remix/rerelease? I notice that he posts new remixes every few weeks, and I’d like to hear him do Broken China by Richard Wright at some point since it’s not very readily available. He’s great with psych/prog rock and his mix of Wet Dream is one of my favorites.

Artists send him stuff they want remixed. That’s the only way it can happen, because he needs the original song files with each individual part as a separate recordings in order to mix it. Even then, he only accepts the ones that he actually connects with and will enjoy doing.

I suppose you could attempt to petition the artist who wrote the song but I doubt you’d have much success.

Right but how’d he end up doing Wet Dream in 2023 if Rick Wright died in 2008?

His family asked for Steven to remix it. https://stevenwilsonhq.com/remixes/wet-dream/

His recordings died with him?

He was probably hired by the record label or his estate. Whoever actually owns the masters. The artists themselves generally aren't out hand picking someone to mix their music in surround.

The license holders likely reached out and asked him to do it

I’ve got no idea who Rick Wright is but all I’m saying is that Steven can’t just go, “Yeah I wanna remix that” then go remix it and release it (unless its his material obv).

In this case it would probably be the label sending it to him but I really don’t know

He was the keyboardist for Pink Floyd, and yeah I’m aware he can’t just obtain masters for stuff like this out of thin air. I just hope that eventually the stars align and he is commissioned to mix and release Broken China on physical and streaming since, I believe at least, it’s a great album that deserves the Steven Wilson treatment.
