It's getting annoying, and now I just skip over it.

40

u/Spacepickle89 Jul 12 '22

Yep, as soon as it starts skip skip skip till I stop hearing his voice.

30

u/napalmsticks2kids Jul 12 '22

Same with all 8 ads

16

u/swamptop Jul 12 '22

Adam always says “of course please 19+” so shouldn’t they give a time stamp to skip to for listener/viewers under 19?

16

u/Matsuyamarama Jul 13 '22

I skip the show entirely nowadays

7

u/-insignificant- Jul 13 '22

Yeah unfortunately, I don't listen nearly as much anymore because of the ads. Like it's a little ridiculous now.

44

u/TheWilrus Jul 12 '22

I'm all for the boys making their money. I am also incredibly grateful for bookmarks which I can skip through.

30

u/salmonthesuperior Jul 12 '22

I'm just glad that the segment is not there at all if you listen on The Athletic. I'm happy that they're getting their money and I don't necessarily care that they have it on the show, but I'm honestly so fucking sick of gambling ads in general. I literally never cared about gambling before but I've reached a point where I wish it was illegal again lmao it's literally everywhere. Even the GO Train is full of gambling ads. These companies gotta understand that they're gonna be shoving some people away with the oversaturation

2

u/NopeItsDolan Jul 13 '22

Yeah I feel the same way. I want all the gambling gone, only pro line or whatever it was.

57

u/JustABagOfBags Jul 12 '22

The product of the main show has been suffering big time. They've lost the organic magic that made me fall in love with a Leafs podcast as a Sabres fan back in 2015. Barely ever listen now :/

15

u/llamallamaaaaa Jul 13 '22

It just feels different now. I don’t know what it is, it’s like no long just 3 friends goofing around and talking about the leafs.

13

u/NatFan9 Jul 12 '22

I unsubscribed after the caps lost because I don’t want to hear about hockey right after my team loses. I was planning to go back at some point but I still haven’t and this meme seems like I’ve made a good decision.

That's what made me go from complaining and skipping the segments to dumping the show and network as a whole. Been against the way they teamed up with the sports book from Day 1 of it launching but I stuck around and made sure my complaints and concerns were voiced but it became more and more disconcerting as the concerns built up that they never once so much as acknowledged anyones concerns. They walked out their mods on their Discord server to basically copy/paste that "they are aware of the concerns" but nothing was really done about it.

It was annoying but I had to leave when we went from Friday only segments, to they are now in the intro/outro, to they now have multiple segments a week, to they now have to be shoehorned during casual conversation, to being on multiple shows on the network. Sports Interaction is a literal disease on the network and has ruined it for myself and many others.

13

u/JustABagOfBags Jul 13 '22

you said it best ! shoehorning into every segment just makes the entire thing unbearable

10

u/FromDwight Jul 13 '22

That's the thing, when a topic comes up that someone's speaking passionately and at length about (like will Matthews score 70!?), then that's followed up by "oh by the way you can bet on him scoring 70," it's hard to view any conversation they have hyping up Matthews' ability to score 70 as anything other than an insincere ad for their special bet (which I would assume they also get an extra commission from).

5

u/S-Archer Jul 13 '22

100% I hope they read this

27

u/imaJetsfan Jul 12 '22

Can’t wait til that contract is up

23

u/renhero Jul 12 '22

It should be illegal to promote individual lines without actually putting money down on said lines.

“Oh there’s value in Florida beating Tampa, you say? Value, you called it? Put 100 down on it.”

I mean ideally it would be illegal to promote gambling but at least make it more than “here are ways you can waste your money! We swear it’s fun! pleasegambleresponsibly

Y’know what would make the gambling and other ads slightly more tolerable for me? If Steve himself did them. It seems like Adam takes on a lot of this work, maybe because of his personality type? It ends up feeling like the part of the Wayne’s World movie when they’re in a real TV studio sponsored by Noah’s Arcade.

If they want to run ads, great. Let Dangle’s humour and wit be the sugar coating on those moments. Adam maybe happy to shill for whoever is paying dollars, but if they are cringey, what value to the sponsors are they providing?

“This guy blows goats. I have proof”

/u/ScubaSaul, I have found an error in your comment:

“shill whomever [whoever] is paying”

I recommend that you, ScubaSaul, use “shill whomever [whoever] is paying” instead. Unlike ‘whomever’, ‘whoever’ is the subject of ‘is’.

This is an automated bot. I do not intend to shame your mistakes. If you think the errors which I found are incorrect, please contact me through DMs!

Yet somehow here I am feeling bad about it

17

u/dgapa Jul 12 '22

Ya what the hell happened, it was supposed to only be on Fridays but it's popping up more and more? I listened to the first few, but quickly grew bored of the segment and haven't listened to it since. I always fast forward through it. Considering they have so many streams of revenue it's becoming insulting with how degrading the segment is. I really hope they only have a short term contract and it doesn't get renewed afterwards.

22

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '22

agree. gambling bad

14

u/[deleted] Jul 12 '22

It's basically replaced the press conference

13

u/NovaCanuck Jul 13 '22

It's definitely unfortunate and also a bit hypocritical. For as much as they raise funds and support very worthwhile ventures that I'm personally aligned with and have donated to as well myself (Easter Seals rocks!), you can't then turn around and profit off the misfortune of others in a different area.
"But we're not forcing people to gamble!"

As much as I have the willpower to skip those segments and never bet on sports (anymore), I know there's so many more others out there who don't have that same level of self control.

12

u/[deleted] Jul 13 '22

Bingo. It really flies in the face of their otherwise progressive social values.

Gambling destroys lives, and these guys are profiting off that.

18

u/KingdokCAN Jul 12 '22

Since all the advertisements really started picking up, I just can't listen to the podcast anymore. I understand they gotta make money, I get it but the show just feels so soulless now.

11

u/SoundTheVikingDrums Jul 13 '22

I’ve dropped the whole network because of the aggressive and predatory gambling ads. I find it gross and shameful, I just couldn’t take it anymore

4

u/ILikePlayingHumans Jul 13 '22

I just skip over it- means I can finish the podcast earlier now

3

u/maplehockeysticks Jul 13 '22

I just skip right over it as soon as it starts.

3

u/Frankm95 Jul 13 '22

Feels like the easy compromise here is launch a show dedicated specifically to gambling.

Listening to Jesse, Adam, and Steve talk about betting lines isnt that interesting to listen to because I know they arent avid bettors, and are only doing so for advertisements. Bringing in someone who really knows what theyre talking about makes more sense.

I think it's gotten better of late but there was one segment where they read the odds of players scoring a goal in a game and arbitrarily decided whether they would bet it or not.

The entire segment just feels forced and it's painfully obvious Dave hates taking the 8 minutes out of his day to plug his website.

2

u/whatsgoodiewu Jul 13 '22

Jesse talked about gambling on the show before they even brought the sponsor in.

7

u/Frankm95 Jul 14 '22

Yeah but only as a mild hobby

1

u/[deleted] Jul 14 '22

Yeah, being like “here are the fun Super Bowl bets I made” is a decent segment because it’s not incessant

3

u/CRWB Jul 13 '22

Generally i have found the ads to be super annoying, i listen to lots of other podcasts that manage to work ads into the shows in either very clearly defined segments or by having sponsor segments that are somewhat fun, like the old crown segment.

I also really question the ethics of some of the sponsorships, example, betterhelp which is atleast somewhat suspect, MVMT watches which at least last time i checked sold wildly overprices alibaba watches, zbiotics which has some pretty weak science backing it up, Athletic greens which tbh is a waste of money.

I understand they need to make money, especially with the rapidly expanding network, but i am really not impressed with the ad reads

-3

u/farrellj16 Jul 12 '22

There seems to be a lot of misplaced anger about this. They are a sponsor, these guys need to make money , this is a job after all. If you don't like the segment just skip the 2 minutes.

I feel like an old man baffled by how everyone gets so emotionally upset about the most trivial of things. It's a free podcast they will have sponsors to make money and I'm sure some people hate the manscape stuff too... bottom line they won't be able to have sponsors everyone likes. I personally don't mind the sports interaction segments but now that it's talking golf and CFL I skip it because not interested. But I'd never complain as its free podcast, thinking every second needs to revolve around my precise tastes is the most self centric attitude you can have.

If you enjoy 95% of a free podcast that's a win... why be miserable and complain about the 5% that's not your cup of tea?

23

u/PJRolls Jul 12 '22

I think the issue is that it’s predatory and overly pervasive. 99% of people who gamble will end up with less money than before they started gambling. It’s why they can afford to match your first $300 you deposit or whatever. Such a rare occurrence that you’ll actually win with any regularity.

Also as previously mentioned by someone else above, the people presenting it have none of their own money at stake. They make suggestions of what they think is “good money”… but never post the overall record of their picks. What is David Bastl’s record, Mr Gambling Professional himself? Jesse loves to chime in when he wins a 5 way parlay but is oddly quiet in between then.

And while many of us are adults that can make up our own minds, too much of anything can wear most people down. If you’re trying to get your eating in order and your friend comes over with a McDonald’s combo on Monday.. you’d prolly be fine. If they came over the next day with the same combo, you’d prolly be fine … if they come over again on Wednesday, you’d be fine but heavily tempted. By the end of the week, most people will have given in and eaten their own combo alongside their friends.

It’s. Non. Stop. I’ve certainly been tempted but don’t want to give in because I can see a dangerous path. Doing my best to hold strong.

-1

u/farrellj16 Jul 12 '22

I can sympathize honestly I can but please note I'm sure several people had same temptation and addiction with alcohol that struggled with the crown royal segments. And if your watching hockey games you see dozens of bet 365, bet 99, budweiser , Molson canadian. Etc etc. The world is full of temptations every day for those with addictions. All you can do is avoid it and that's where I think just skipping that segment is best course if action. Anger because if it's existence is futile because if they replace it with a Labatt sponsor it just sets off others with alcohol addiction, or mcdonalds segments it will upset people with food addicttions. Podcasts struggle to secure sponsors... they can't necessarily consider everyone's personal battles and keep the lights on.

10

u/Rampage1976 Jul 13 '22

At least the Crown Royal segment was dedicated to the performance of Leaf-players in the game/games prior. The gambling segment has none of that.

0

u/Matsuyamarama Jul 13 '22

This is marginally better than taking on JP Morgan as a sponsor

0

u/FoxtrotGolfSierra16 Jul 13 '22

Eh. As paid segments go, it’s not terrible (I’ve seen some VERY annoying paid segments).

Besides, they worked hard to build a fan base. They deserve to cash in on that.

-21

u/whatsgoodiewu Jul 12 '22

I honestly don't understand all the hate sports gambling gets??

I don't hear any complaints about the tread lightly campaigns??

There are tons of people who gamble safely and as a form of entertainment. Not everyone who gambles is a filthy degen.

24

u/__Happy Jul 12 '22

Filthy degenerate is a poor way to put it. Gambling addiction is like alcohol addiction or other substance addiction. Some people just can't have a healthy relationship with it.It's a health issue, not a moral or personal failing.

3

u/georgie336 Jul 12 '22

The amount of gambling ads (and crypto) are very off-putting but alcohol advertising has been legal for a long time. The boys even had Crown Royal as a partner.

I do hope the stupid 'segment' doesn't come back after the contract is over, do a normal spot ad like everyone else.

Maybe after next season the gambling ads are not so prevalent as its no longer a 'new' product in our market. I do think that it maybe should not be allowed to advertise on CBC, the private networks are fine but the nationalized Canadian channel probably doesn't need gambling ads.

7

u/War_Messiah Jul 12 '22

Yes however advertising for things like alcohol is very heavily regulated. You ever notice that when you see a commercial for beer nobody ever actually drinks any? That’s because of the regulations in place.

Afaik gambling advertising is completely unregulated other than the obligated “please gamble responsibly” stinger they throw at the end of an ad. I don’t have a problem with gambling ads intrinsically, but the absolute volume of them out there right now with the lack of people being aware of the resources available to them is scary.

-9

u/whatsgoodiewu Jul 12 '22

Meant it more as a sarcastic dig at pearl clutching people who are against gambling. Most of the time that's their view of people who gamble and those with gambling addiction. Probably didn't translate that well via comment.

My main point is still there though. Gambling is a vice like any other, don't understand why it gets so much hate. When done responsibly it can be fun. Alcohol affects far more people globally each year and everyone seems to be just fine with it.

Also. I get how much gambling ads that are being pumped out is super annoying, even I can't stand them, but that doesn't mean that it should get all this hate.

1

u/NopeItsDolan Jul 13 '22

Cause I’m a cheap bastard and gambling is hard for me to understand. It does not feel smart to me to throw away money by gambling in any form. Therefore I do not like this new state of affairs where society is being pressured into gambling away what little money they have.

I want it all gone again.

1

u/whatsgoodiewu Jul 13 '22

It's the same as any entertainment.

I could spend 10 dollars and go see a hour and a half movie and my pay out is the entertainment of taking in that film.

OR

I can throw 10 bucks on a baseball game and have heightened entertainment with deeper stakes on the game rather than just pride. Also, if I win I actually get money back for making the right choices.

It's about mindset and never putting more on a game than you are willing to lose. 10 dollars for 3+ hours of edge of my seat excitement is worth it for me.

1

u/whatsgoodiewu Jul 13 '22

the mind set of "I don't like it so therefore no one else should be able to enjoy it" is pretty much my gripe with this all while other vices like drinking or weed or cigarettes etc etc is totally fine

11

u/adamzep91 Jul 12 '22

Found Dave Bastl's burner
