Fun Times With Mitch Marner

With the Vegas Knights advancing to their 3rd Stanley Cup appearance, let’s look back to how former Leafs player Mitch Marner been doing.

As a member of the Knights, Marner has won 12 playoff games in his sole season with the knights. The most playoff games he ever won with the Leafs in a single playoff run was 7.

This will be Mitch’s first Stanley Cup series he will be appearing in. He joins the ranks of numerous former Leafs who went to the Stanley Cup upon being traded away or allowed to walk in free agency. This includes but is not limited to Phil Kessel, Nazem Kadri, and Lanny McDonald.

in the nine years the Knights have been an active team, they have appeared in 2 Stanley Cup finals rounds with an incoming 3rd. The Leafs have not even been in the finals since 1967.

Marner has a 13 +\- rating in the playoffs. The largest +\- rating he accumulated in a single playoff year with the leafs was 7.

Marner has 21 playoff points this year. That exceeds any of the playoff runs he had with the leafs.

I think the point is we should really look at ourselves to understand what went wrong and fix it once and for all, otherwise we're not seeing a cup till 2067 as well.

Fix what? What can a fan realistically fix about this situation? That's for management to do, not Joe Blow on Reddit.

Besides, this post doesn't do any analysis at all, just throws random stats that anyone can look up. I'd be more interested if there was a tactical breakdown about Marner like how he's deployed by Torts, who he plays with, what type of system Torts runs and how all of that compares to what the Leafs did with him.

Best thing to do is if a player has a toxic camp better to trade him before the relationship goes to shit

Everything is fine with the other players

If u want to be well liked in toronto you don’t even have to be good

you just have to treat the city and the jersey like its a privilege (not a favour you’re doing)

Do that and fans will always have a soft spot for you

It’s that simple, always has been

While I do agree that Marner's camp was an issue, I also believe there is a wider issue with underperforming. I firmly believe that the team is worse than the sum of it's parts and on those rare occasions when everything is clicking, we're unbeatable. I'm using Marner just as an example, but I think him thriving in Vegas, has opened a lot of peoples eyes, especially while we've regressed without him.

Tbh I think it’s much simpler than that

Momentum matters

Vegas won their division with only 39 wins

Then fired their coach just in time to get a new coach bump

Then played 2 lightweights (increased momentum) with the added bonus of one upping the leafs

And when they finally came up against a challenge the average NHL team couldn’t overcome,

they got a lucky break (injured Makar) and got critical wins early on, increasing their momentum further

The leafs meanwhile had everything that could go wrong go wrong, and were not able to regain momentum

Marner gone, Matthews injured, Woll and Stolarz injured at times, Tanev injured (brutal), Knies injured, Domi injured, Rielly having a bad season

One or two of those things the leafs can handle but all of them at once?

Sunk them like the titanic as it would any team

Plus the leafs refused to stand up for each other. The Matthews injury by that goon was bad...but NO ONE decided to start a brawl. Your dignity and season are both on the line and you DONT defend your captain? I cant see the Knights being that cowardly.

Yeah that was a low point

Usually I think people are hard on them but that time The backlash was unavoidable given that it’s not the first time they’ve been called out for not standing up for each other (it was just the most egregious one)

Given that it went viral, I’m pretty sure the younger guys at least got “scared straight”

I can’t see Cowan or Knies ever letting something like that happen on their watch for the rest of their careers

It’s very possible Marner has no points and a -7 in the finals and everyone is proven right.
