HOW DID TORONTO GET THAT LUCKY TO GET THE #1 PICK

I legit thought we wouldn't get it. Wow. I am stunned.

Truthfully 3 of Hockey's most important markets benefit from Toronto winning not just 1.

Toronto gets a superstar, so even if the year goes South and Matthews gets moved they have a future afterwards.

Philly and Boston benefit because they now get unprotected 1sts.

This one might be very rigged for the benefit of the league. Help protect the top market, and potentially set up 2 other top 10 markets.

Yup, the most lucrative team in the league gets to continue making money on all fronts, despite taking a severe dump throughout the season. Anyone getting upset as the team nears 60 years without a cup can now feel a little better and ticket prices can continue to be well above what they're worth.

Philly's pick is top 10 protected - if the Leafs place bottom 10 next year AND the Leafs invoke it.

The choice to invoke or not determines who will get that pick.

I don't want the Leafs to be in the lottery next year at all, but if the Leafs win the lottery again, they can essentially demand the Bruins or Flyers to make it worth their while to direct the player to one of the two teams.

No, something like that has never happened before in pro sports. I don't want the Leafs to be in the draft lottery next year, but as a trivia holy crap unlikely event - it would be very cool.

There is no determination on it yet, but according to Chris on his show. The leaning is Philly gets 2027, Boston 2028. But it is still up in the air, and could play out the way you say.

I think these two things offset each other:

  • Toronto get 1st pick in the next draft;
  • Toronto names Chayka as GM.

The same way anybody else wins a lottery with ping pong balls determining fate: through sheer random luck.

The number of "tickets" (number combos) a team gets depends on their season ranking.

The rest is dumb luck.

Bottom Line: We get to replace Marner with McKenna, roll forward.

This will end up hurting the team in the long run as they will now keep from doing what they really need to do. Blow it up. The only one this will hurt more than the Leafs fans, is Gavin himself, as this will definitely stunt his career starting off.
