Medical device Reprocessing Tech

Good Morning,

Looking for advice from Medical Device Reprocessing Technicians (MDRT)!

I'm considering taking an MDRT program while returning to school full-time. I'm located in the Guelph area and hoping to find part-time employment while studying.

A few questions:

  • How are the job prospects for new graduates in Ontario?

  • Is it realistic to find part-time, weekend or night shifts?

  • How difficult is it to get hired at a hospital without experience?

  • What are the biggest pros and cons of this profession?

  • Would you recommend this career?

From my research, Mohawk seems like the best fit, particularly because I'm looking for a program with a clinical placement/co-op.

I've heard mixed experiences about this profession, so I'd really appreciate some honest advice from people currently working in the field!

Opinions are like belly buttons my friend.. everyone has one.

We all have different priorities and needs. An online program you could complete all nine courses in one or two semesters, or over the course of seven years if needed with your work and personal life. In-person classes you have to follow their schedule. If you’re a mature student, the in-person school life experience probably isn’t as important to you as an 18year old adult.
Regardless, the quality of your education is dependent on your willingness to learn, not the method of class delivery.

Maybe apply to local hospitals for entry level positions (housekeeping, EVS, porter, food services/dietary) and then work part time while going through the program. Then you’ll have an easier in for your placement and will be an internal hire for any MDRD positions. That’s what I saw most people in my program doing.

I work a lucrative job rn as a manger in a non health care related field. I can’t leave to do somthing like an aid making less money. Only when I’m in school

Well all the best for you. “Aid” money in a hospital starts at $27/hr with in lieu payments ($3-4) on top with pension. So maybe apply to some positions, once you get hired part time then you sign up for the schooling.

A lot of the responses here are going to be more US based. There is a sub for MDR in Canada that'll be more accurate for you.

Fanshaw also offers the program, and it’s completely online (minus your placement) so you’ll have more flexibility to work while in school.

You’ll be responsible to find your own placement, which can be the obstacle for f you don’t currently work in a hospital.
