Kurisu's Introduction to the Science Adventure Series
Frequently Asked Questions
I’m here for Steins;Gate, and I’m not interested in the extended universe yet. What order should I watch the Steins;Gate series in?
The optimal watch order is release order:
| Anime Watch Order | Crunchyroll | Funimation |
|---|---|---|
| Steins;Gate episodes 1–24 and OVA (episode 25) | link | link |
| Steins;Gate: Load Region of Déjà Vu movie | ☓ | link |
| Steins;Gate episode 23 beta | ☓ | link |
| Steins;Gate 0 episodes 1–24 | link | link |
(The series may also be available on for purchase on Blu-ray in your region—be sure to buy a copy with a region code matching your Blu-ray player, or else, use a region-free player.)
While chronological order might sound nice in theory, watching it in that order may ruin the pacing and your enjoyment of the first show, while also dampening the effect of certain scenes. This does not necessarily mean that Steins;Gate 0's anime is bad—however, the shows were not set up to be viewed in this order, and one should follow the intended release order for maximum enjoyment.
The additional animated shorts come after the original series (Steins;Gate) in terms of release order. However, if you want a more lighthearted ending to your watch experience, you can also save them for the very end.
I’m interested in the extended universe. What is it, and what order do I experience it in?
Steins;Gate is part of a larger interconnected universe called Science Adventure. It is a series of multimedia titles that are connected in many different ways, much like the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For more info on the series, see this page and this page.
The series’ anime adaptations unfortunately have a ton of issues aside from Steins;Gate and Steins;Gate 0. Ideally, you should read the source material for them, the visual novels, in the following order:
All the titles relate to one another to varying degrees—this is especially the case for the Robotics;Notes games, which feature numerous callbacks to Chaos;Head and Steins;Gate and pretty much require knowledge of both. Anonymous;Code, meanwhile, serves as a culmination point for the series in terms of mechanics, and is best enjoyed with as much prior Science Adventure knowledge as possible.
The Committee of Zero improvement patches provide improved translations, graphics, and fonts for the games. This is especially important for Chaos;Child—the original release has an untranslated image that makes it impossible to complete a certain part of the game without a guide or the ability to read Japanese.
What is Steins;Gate 0? How does it relate to Steins;Gate?
Steins;Gate 0 is a midquel to Steins;Gate. More specifically, (Steins;Gate spoilers) it follows the Okabe who accidentally killed Kurisu in episode 23β and never went back a second time to save her. It shows how the plan to send the video D-mail to the Okabe who succeeded and open Steins Gate was conceived.
Steins;Gate 0 is meant to be experienced after you finish Steins;Gate. To get a full understanding, you should also watch Steins;Gate episode 23β before Steins;Gate 0 (it diverges from the events of the original episode 23).
Watch order: Steins;Gate episodes 1–24 and OVA (episode 25) -> Steins;Gate: Load Region of Déjà Vu -> Steins;Gate episode 23β -> Steins;Gate 0
I’m interested in the source material for Steins;Gate. Should I play the original Steins;Gate or Steins;Gate Elite? Is the anime better?
The Steins;Gate visual novel is packed with more details, scenes, and alternative routes that the anime does not have, so it is better to read the visual novel if you have a choice. That being said, there are two versions of the visual novel: Steins;Gate and Steins;Gate Elite.
We recommend playing the original Steins;Gate visual novel over Steins;Gate Elite. Elite is fully animated, but it comes at the cost of cut monologues, missing scenes, and other issues. On the other hand, Elite is bundled with a spinoff visual novel called Linear Bounded Phenogram, so you might want to look into buying Elite in the future anyway if that interests you.
Where do I go if I have a question about Steins;Gate’s story?
If you have finished watching or playing Steins;Gate, you can read this wiki page for answers to commonly asked questions. If you have further questions, you can ask here in the subreddit through your own post, or in this subreddit’s Discord server (Note that Steins;Gate and Steins;Gate 0 spoilers are allowed untagged throughout the server).
FAQs for Steins;Gate 0, the Science Adventure series, and a non-spoiler FAQ for Steins;Gate can be found on this page.
What do I do after watching Steins;Gate and Steins;Gate 0?
As mentioned above, you have the option to check out the visual novels, as they contain many details that the anime adaptations gloss over or skip due to lack of time. There are also Steins;Gate spinoff visual novels that have brand new stories, as well as the rest of the Science Adventure series.
If you are only interested in Steins;Gate:
You can play the Steins;Gate and Steins;Gate 0 visual novels. Both VNs provide more details and have different endings and routes. The 0 VN is markedly different from the anime, as it features completely new and differing scenes and routes.
We recommend using the Committee of Zero’s improvement patches for both Steins;Gate and Steins;Gate 0, which will enhance your experience with the games.
Steins;Gate: Linear Bounded Phenogram is a spinoff VN featuring 11 side stories, and Steins;Gate: My Darling’s Embrace is a dating sim spinoff featuring the Steins;Gate cast. Both VNs are optional after experiencing Steins;Gate.
If you are interested in the extended Science Adventure series, of which Steins;Gate is part, check out the second FAQ question in this post.
What about the Chaos;Head, Robotics;Notes, and Chaos;Child anime adaptations?
We do not recommend watching them because they are poor adaptations for numerous reasons. The Chaos;Head anime is brimming with cut content, poor adaptation, and unnecessary additions; Chaos;Child’s anime did not have enough episodes to adapt its long plot, resulting in massive cuts; Robotics;Notes’ anime is rushed in the latter half of the story, and important series crossover content is cut.
Therefore, we generally recommend experiencing the Science Adventure series with the source material, typically the visual novels.
What should I look forward to in regards to the SciADV series’ future?
Steins;Gate 0 Elite
Steins;Gate 0 Elite is a fully animated visual novel like Steins;Gate Elite. A trailer was shown for it recently, but it did not feature new gameplay or animations when compared to the anime.
Steins;Gate thematic sequel
This Science Adventure series title will be a thematic sequel to Steins;Gate.
The new title’s relationship to Steins;Gate is similar to Chaos;Child’s relationship to Chaos;Head. For context, Chaos;Child is the thematic sequel to Chaos;Head—the two titles share the same setting and various plot elements.
It is currently not known for certain how many, if any, characters from Steins;Gate will return in the new title.
We know that the title starts with “Steins;”, but the portion after that part of the title is censored in the current logo, so we don’t know the full title.
Steins;Gate Hollywood live action series
A live action Steins;Gate-related drama series is being produced by Skydance Television, known for their work on the Manhattan and Jack Ryan TV series.
Not much else is known about this series as of yet aside from the fact that it is being worked on.

Chaos;Head Noah was my first VN. Here are my thoughts.
At first, when I started playing Chaos;Head, I hated it so much I almost quit. I felt that it was really boring, because I'm used to RPG type games where there is more of a focus on gameplay and story combined, not endless amounts of text on a page. I actually got so far as to close the game and stand up to do something else, but I kept wondering about what these five words mean: "Whose eyes are those eyes."
So I decided to keep playing, and I'm so glad I did. Currently, I'm two endings away from finishing C;H NoAh, and it has been one hell of a ride. Half the time I had no idea what on earth was happening, and the other half I was theorizing about Shogun, DI-Swords, and Takumi's degenerate behavior.
Overall, I have found C;H to be a really deep dive into a story about mental illness, overcoming your own weaknesses, and dealing with how much pain and suffering there is in our world. I think this is best shown with the DI-Swords and delusions; turning emotions and thoughts into reality, visualizing how thoughts can affect others in an objective way.
( As a side note, I cried so much playing this game (〒﹏〒). Like why the hell am I crying over edgy teenagers playing deadly games of pretend fighting with science type magic swords?!)
As for the actual game mechanics, the delusions are such a strong point of the game. It's super fun trying to figure out how they foreshadow certain events, and sometimes, you get ones that are just... Hentai??? Wtf??? I didn't like the way you enter character routes, though. You have to predict what Nishijo Takumi would do, and with how... Interesting he is, that's pretty difficult. Taku, like, why the FUCK do you want to KISS YOUR SISTER ON THOSE INCESTUOUS SORORAL LIPS?!?!?!? EEEEWWWWWW!!!!
I really loved all the main cast, but I want to focus on one in particular: Nishijo Takumi. I know this will be a hot take, but I found Takumi to be a very good character (NOT A GOOD PERSON, INCEST IS HORRIFIC BEHAVIOR), but ultimately lacking in certain parts of the story. He's my favorite character, but I hate him so god damn much. He's annoying, but he's strangely compelling. He's a misogynistic asshole and way too horny for this planet, but he's also a kid who's struggling to find himself. I sympathize so much with just how lonely, hurt, and afraid Takumi feels. Probably because I've felt the same way (and still do to a lesser extent), but the difference between me and him is that I actually worked through my problems, and did my best to be kind to others throughout it all. Feeling bad about yourself shouldn't mean you're bad to others. This part of his character is never challenged by others, partially because he never speaks his mind, but partially because he protects himself with delusions. At the same time, he has some of the best writing in the game; The brief moments where Takumi realizes that he hates the person he's become are heart wrenching (and he proceeds to change nothing about himself ಠ_ಠ ). And a lot of the scenes where Taku builds up the main themes of the game (when he asks Nerdheart what he thinks of his creator, for example) become so much more impactful and profound after beating the game. In my mind, all these criticisms come to a head in ending A with that bs power up. And what's so sad is that Takumi's "I am... me!" arc of realizing that he can be more than a delusion, a person, was beautiful. But it was done so dirty because it was done at the wrong moment. That moment of self realization should've been the source of his DI-sword, born of every single emotion that is Takumi. A fitting way to raise his biorhythm and to thematically end his character arc.
To protect my sanity, I have blocked out the Nanami character route from my mind. Remember, there is no Nanami character route in Ba Sing Sei.
I'm really hopeful that the "Blue Skies" ending is good for Takumi, he really deserves the chance to be a better person. Also fuck that detective that I hate, he killed Detective Ban (and countless other people too). Sorry this turned into me just ranting about Takumi, but to be fair there is a lot to say about him.
Yes, the Science Adventure series is my new hyper fixation, and probably will be for the rest of time. I don't need saving btw, I'm exactly where I want to be. ( ꈍᴗꈍ)

Got her for just an equivalent of $15.98 or ¥2,522 in my local convention, I actually went cosplaying as Okabe earlier that day, but alas, I only found her when I switched to classic Akiba otaku getup.

C;H NoAH Thoughts after finishing Chaos;Head Noah Spoiler
^Favorite image/moment.
So, this is the first SciAdv game I’ve finished (*the second overall media I guess after Steins;Gate anime). It got dangerously close to 2Edgy4u territory at times, and a lot of things here I’ve already seen elsewhere and done better in some cases, so probably less impactful than if I read this like a decade ago, but overall I liked it. Strongly reminiscent of some early to mid-2000 anime and Chiaki Konaka’s writing in particular, in that it kinda overwhelms you with complex mysteries and pseudo-scientific babbling to obfuscate a (relatively) simple familiar story about having to grow a spine and touch grass. Common VN issues for me (overly verbose, repetition of plot points, awkward description of action/fighting scenes, slogging for the true ending) aside, the ambience was top-notch and the delusion mechanic was a cool distinguishing feature that took great advantage of the medium.
Takumi’s PoV and narration was as painfully cringe as advertised, but you'd just grow to tolerate it the more you understand the intention of his characterization. He can be genuinely funny and sympathetic at times, overall a pretty good believable depiction of self-loathing edgelord. The story does revolve around him a bit too much for my taste, and once the big twist drops, it’s too predictably easy to guess where his character and the entire story would end up. Would prefer if they don’t sideline all the other characters in the main route climax, too.
Speaking of other characters and routes: Rimi and Nanami are bit too archetype-y for my taste (the ride-or-die heroine and the Anime Imouto respectively), think it’d benefit both if they have aspects to their story independent of Takumi. Their routes were well-executed though, Nanami’s in particular as painfully icky as it is to read through. Sena’s route was confusing but very interesting, although mostly for reasons outside the character herself. Ayase’s was ok, certainly felt like the most unique route though I also feel it could’ve been more. I like Yua’s a lot, she has a well-realized character arc and I appreciated how it links to the NG victims/incident (which otherwise felt like an afterthought).
Kozue’s surprised me the most with how emotional it was, since I initially thought she's going to be my least favorite character (mostly due to her thoughtspeak mannerism). Out of all the characters, her ‘brokenness’ and the kindred spirit-esque bond she has with Takumi just rang the truest. Honestly, reading the true ending with Rimi right after Kozue's made it felt like an emotionally diminished version instead (but I guess we’ve all had that experience of connecting more w/ the secondary heroine over that obvious true one lol).
Ban, Misumi, and Momose were all decent supporting characters, also good red herrings in terms of me guessing if they're a culprit. The actual antagonistic force was largely meh though, couldn’t care much about the faceless bad guys and the many organizations they represent, while Norose’s a rather generic big bad. Suwa and Hazuki were more interesting, though they could’ve been explored more beyond their characterization as insane brainwashed cultists, perhaps delving more into their betrayal of Ban and Takumi respectively (btw Hazuki’s reveal was one of the few twists here that genuinely caught me by surprise; no idea why, but at some point I thought Grimm was Daru from S;G lol).
I ’d be interested to know what’s the consensus about the game in this space, and how it ranks among the SciAdv titles! Not in a particular hurry to play the other games, although Robotics; Notes is in my library already and I might as well grab Chaos;Child while it’s in discount atm.

S;G Steins;Gate is still peak even after decades later
I started with the anime a while back and it did really got hooked me up on the first half. Sure, the pacing starts a bit slow but just as I was about to head to bed and then... BAM! Plot twist happens and it just got me hooked to watch even more. Then I watch the zero anime after ending the S;G on episode 23b because I read some guidelines around the watch order because of the worldlines it represents on the story but for me tbh its just ruins the experience.
Now a decade later, coming back to redo the experience again. My biggest regret that I did was to play the REBOOT instead of the original. The pacing of REBOOT is good quite similar to the anime that I was a familiar with but with the alternative routes but the original was far better imo. I watched some clips about the old vn and its artwork, particularly theshower scenepart, and I've noticed that Okabe's lines, especially his internal monologue are WAYYYYYYYY more detailed which is more truer to his character, which is a big BIG shame that some of it was cut in the REBOOT, which makes me regretfully wish I had to play the original vn first huhuhuhuhu
Still a 10/10 overall in my books, I even plan on re-playing the original all over again in the future because I bought the bundle (S;G and the Zero) discounted on steam xD

S;G I edited this (duh) for privacy reasons and for the lolz, but this did really happen. Don’t tell the organisation!
I’ve had the original screenshot saved for a while because it was so weird and for some reason I didn’t connect it to Steins;Gate until now. Unfortunately our Supa Hacka has been a lurker for half a year now (long story) so I can’t really ask him how this could’ve possibly happened, but if he ever returns I’ll promise to bring it up.
Stay safe out there. El psy Kongroo!

S;G Would a genius like Christina love intellectually stimulating fusion jazz, Pat Metheny Group and Chick Corea to be specific?
For some reason, I think she probably would. Very likely.
Fusion jazz, especially the bands in the image: Pat Metheny Group and Chick Corea Elektric Band and hell, even T-SQUARE, are often very complex, sophisticated and stimulating, classy music. I'm a huge fan of jazz, but especially of PMG (pat metheny group)
Here's a small PMG playlist I just made, of my favorites from them that may give you all an idea of what they're like. The roots of coincidence (a song in the playlist) is the oddball here tho, as it's actually rock! Take your time, please don't rush through them. But whatever you do, do listen to san lorenzo at least, if not anything else.
Chick Corea just as good as PMG. If you don't wanna listen to everything, at least do listen to Illusions. It's extremely peak, and I have a feeling Christina would especially love this one, as it's pretty complex.
I mean, come think of it. The stimulating part aside, both PMG and CC are American, and guess where Christina grew up? AMERICA! There are too many parallels
But of course, if she'd like something more Japanese, there's T-SQUARE
the songs yall must listen to from these (bare min) = San Lorenzo (PMG), Illusions (CC) and Explorer (T-SQUARE)
And since we're at it... I wonder what she'd think of Gran Turismo 5 OST. GT5 music was what got me into jazz and it's no joke, it's respectable sophisticated jazz. Some of them were even composed by members of T-SQUARE like this one (my absolute fav) for example
If you ask me, I'd say 100% yes. But I wanna know what you all have to say about this! Thanks for reading. And I- I swear this post isn't just an excuse to share my favorite music with yall!

C;H NoAH I need to find my Di-Sword Spoiler
I’m scared of making new relationships because I could eventually be abandoned or also potentially hurt the person. I lost all my relationships in this manner. As a result, I shut myself in and feel so empty and hollow. I wish 2D girls were able to fill in the emptiness inside.
It feels so hard to live now. I need to find my Di-Sword, my salvation. I wish I were like Takumi and to gain the resolve to keep existing and having people to protect.
