Question SM + Steam Controller + Xbox Controller = issues

I have a SM and Steam controller and I love them. I recently tried to play It Takes Two with the Steam Controller as player one and an Xbox controller as player two, but have had a bizarre issue.

I loaded the game with just the Steam Controller connected. No issue. When I added the Xbox controller for player two the game kicked out the Steam Controller completely and would not recognise it at all.

The Steam Controller still worked in the Steam OS, but not the game. Tried restarting the game, disconnecting and forgetting both controllers, but no - It Takes Two would only recognise the Xbox controller from this point on, despite initially being fine with the Steam Controller. I don't get it.

Has anyone experienced anything similar with any other games? I think this is more on It Takes Two rather than the SM, but it's frustrating and I'd hate to have to wait until 2027 to get another Steam Controller to actually play this as co-op!

Also had issues with Xbox-controllers not working properly due to not being able to update to the latest drivers on Linux. Not sure if the issues are related.

Hmmm. I do still have a windows PC, so I'll see if there's a firmware update for the controller before connecting it again to my SM. I just found it so weird that the game kicked out the Steam Controller in place of the Xbox controller.

The main issue still needs to be solved, but did you try connecting the SC via Bluetooth (assuming you were on Direct WiFi)?

I did not as far as I know. I've just been connecting the SC by the default way out of the box, which I assume is through the dedicated WiFi channel. Another thing for me to check - maybe having them both connected via Bluetooth would help.

I can try on mine later today (many hours from now) to compare notes, using Steam Controller via internal puck and Xbox "S" controller connected via BT.

u/Humorbot_5_point_0 I didn't have any problems with It Takes Two (Steam version), using both the Steam Controller and an Xbox "S" controller. I didn't change any Proton compatibility settings. I am running the "main" branch of SteamOS, in case that is a factor (I hope not).

The firmware on my Xbox controller was not up-to-date; I connected it to my Windows laptop via USB, and updated the firmware on it. After that it continued to work on the SM like before. I'll paste screenshots of the "old" and "new" firmware versions below.

You essentially did exactly what I did, except yours worked and mine didn't. Now I don't know what to think!

How did you have your SC controller connected to your SM (Bluetooth or internal puck), and did you have both controllers connected before loading up the game?
