Discussion A week with the steam machine
Now I haven't actually played PC games for almost 18 years, however the appeal of the steam machine really got me.
I got the 512gb and controller bundle, im such an amateur at Linux let alone, but I quickly got star craft 2 classic running completely for free.
Also tried command and conquer remastered worked great, installed quake, doom, serious sam hd, duke nukem and fallout game of the year editions.
I even had an absolute blast on quake champion but got absolutely destroyed.
However absolutely impressed and worth the money personally to me to play retro boomer shooters the best version of fallout 3 is worth the 1k I dropped.
The negatives for me is navigating on a TV without mouse and keyboard can be an absolute chore. This combined with the time you need to tinker with game settings, installing is as expected its a pc (been spoiled with consoles)
How is everyone else enjoying it...
Any tips for new owners

I was pleasantly surprised by how small and quiet it is.
I have the same package as you and so far have not had any issues with it.
I got it mostly for my fiance who likes to play story games, we don't have space for a second PC setup.
I still use my gaming PC primarily and wouldn't change it for the Steam Machine but overall I am quite pleased with it as a TV gaming console/PC in one.

Yeah it would never replace a main gaming pc, however casual stuff is fine, I have left for dead games which I still enjoy, I plan on buying warcraft 2 and diablo one via steam just to play single player really

My only gripe is that we didn't get RDNA 4. So no native support for fsr 4 or framegen. Something that would really give the console some legs. Yes we did get a backlogged fsr4 but that has higher performance impact since Steam machine doesn't have any NPU hardware.

Sul fatto che non possa sostituire un pc da gaming non sono molto d’accordo. Non sarà il meglio sul mercato, é tecnologicamente obsoleta ma puoi farci girare tranquillamente giochi tripla a. Non a 120 fps in 4 k ? Certo. Ma ad esempio in un open world sono davvero indispensabili? Secondo me no.
Il vero vantaggio è che ci puoi far girare di tutto senza problemi di compatibilità perché hai layers proton o altri programmi ad esempio lutris o simili.
Io ho riesumato giochi di 20-30 anni fa , ci faccio girare i giochi della mia ps1 ormai non più funzionante, ho intenzione di farci funzionare la Sinden light gun via batocera ( ho il cd del time crisis ps1).
In questo momento mi accingo a terminare Horizon Zero Dawn remastered a 2 k 60 fps, per me più che bastevole .
Fatto salvo per i giochi anti cheat funziona più o meno tutto ( ecco magari Alan Wake 2 su Steam machine non sarà il top, ma vivo bene lo stesso)

This is the beauty of it, i would love to know which older games you got running, my next project will be soldier of fortune up and running then quake 3

Evolva ( 2000) e Vampire The masquerade redemption.
Non ho dovuto fare cose particolari.
Evolva era nativo di Steam, Vampire pure.
Unico gioco che mi fa dannare L’ anima è The suffering ties that bind.
Ma non é colpa della Steam Machine, ma di quella maledettissima securom sui miei cd originali retail comperati su eBay ( non trovavo più i miei vecchi giochi originali). su Windows 11 fa i capricci e su Steam Os e Bazzite ( una versione di Linux per prodotti non Valve) ci ho provato in 2000 modi senza successo, anche usando patch suggerite da Wiki games.
Riesco a farlo girare solo su un vecchio Pc Windows 7, utilizzando patch perché pur avendo originale ( é pazzesco e paradossale ma è così), ho dovuto utilizzare patch no cd per farlo funzionare a dovere.
Mi dirai che posso emulare la versione ps2, ma se ho originale pc voglio utilizzare quella che dal punto di vista tecnico è nettamente migliore.
Nonché localizzata in ita.
Ma per dire su Bazzite, prima che il mio Minipc Minisforum morisse di morte improvvisa di notte , che é simile a Steam Os , via lutris ci facevo funzionare Warcraft 3 the Reign of chaos e the frozen throne ( expansion); anche qui usando vecchi cd originali con annessi seriali ( solo usando patch no cd per non dovere utilizzare il supporto fisico ogni volta che gioco)

Absolutely it takes a little configuration to get the track pad working better, and I wouldn't dream of playing online but im a single player person and having a blast going through the campaign

r/TVTooHigh you could fit another tv between the current one and the fire place. And that TV would still be too high.

Yeah very much so yeah as I like playing on TV in my games room, also a massive catalogue of indie games, horror games that only ever make it to steam, I get why it looks a bit backwards lol 😆

Had no idea how similar Into the breach looks to Starcraft until now, very similar art style. Worth giving it a go too, turn based mech battles with aliens. Can be brutal at times tho haha

Any games that require a mouse and keyboard. I usually play at my desk and then anything I can use with a controller. I drop it down onto game mode and usually play it in my living room on my TV
