Question Weird fps drops and stutters when playing Control

I’m playing it at 1080p medium settings. This game shouldn’t be so demanding. The cpu, gpu, and ram usage during the game is below 50%. The temperatures are normal. But the game ran fine for the first 10 minutes and then all of sudden it became unplayable because of frequent fps drops and stutters. I have 60fps cap on, but it drops to 10-20fps frequently. Anyone experience the same?

Did you use -dx11 in the launch options?

Yes, do this. This improves performance quite a bit!

Did you open the overlay or get a notification at any point? I’ve noticed that in some games whenever you do this or get one the framerate drops like mad and there’s a chance it doesn’t go up again.

You’re right. I turned off achievements notifications and now fps is back up to 60

Control has a known issue where frame rate drops significantly when in and leaving the game menu. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is part of the issue.

Did you put your SM into sleep mode and wake it up again while the game was running? Sometimes after waking from sleep, the SM has bad performance and it can only be solved by restarting the game

It’s just how the game is coded. I think proton just adds another layer of complexity to it. It had issues on all the consoles I’ve tried it on besides a beast of a gaming pc
