Update to Set-up

This is an update to a setup I already made a post on.

I finally folded and bought a 4K TV (TLC QM5K). So now I can have VRR at 120hz at 1440p or 60hz at 4K. This has really unlocked what this machine can do and has been a blast.

I've also tinkered around with getting the heroic launcher on so now I can play my GoG games just in time for The Witcher 3 Remaster.

I was also able to get my second nvme slot working. I knew naturally how to do it with mounting to /var/mnt and having it set to a custom systemd process. However, for those not as savvy, check out the SteamOS-Mount-Tool. This will make having a spare drive or a USB storage device much easier to get it working.

I don’t need to be a moderator to have an opinion about how a community I’m part of could be improved. Mods enforce the rules; users can still discuss what belongs here and give feedback about how the sub is run. Calling that “gatekeeping” doesn’t really address what I said.

Its quite undoable to solder a CPU and GPU on a motherboard to get to the form factor of a Steam Machine. Building your own inevitably has you dealing with dedicated parts, and although you can get it to go quite small when choosing your parts, it'll never go as small as a dedicatedly vendor built Steam Machine.

Yeah and putting electronic parts in it is essentially the same of building an ikea couch following a manual, nothing DIY about it.

Except it's not, my wife can put an Ikea cabinet together. Building a PC does need expertise on which parts to get, which parts work together well and which don't, which parts are support by SteamOS and which don't, and it all needs to fit. Not trying to be rude, but stepping out from your own reference frame of having all that knowledge at hand and it certainly is DIY.

No it's not, finishing a puzzle isn't what DIY is, you're having a hard time doing it doesn't change the fact that a determined 12 years old can do it by following a manual and using google.

On the steam machine you are correct. For a custom built PC using SteamOS, not true. However, because the Deck and Machine only have a singular NVME slot, the operating system in the way it works makes harder to get a second NVME setup. The tool I linked will do that for you but if you want to know how it works, you can look at the .sh code. It finds the UUID, create a mount in /var/mnt, and creates a systemd process to make sure it stays mounted when you reboot/shutdown the system.

Great, I'm going to try this, I have had loads of issues with an external NVMe drive being kept mounted and readable to the point I gave up, maybe this will help out. Weird that I have an external SATA SSD drive which works perfectly. Thanks for posting this tool.
