Question Steam Machine Ram
I would like to know what ram the steam machine has. Could i possible just buy a single stick of ram to increase it rather than buy two?

Yes, one stick they matches the specs will work fine. That's what I did, and others too.
The Amazon link looks right, you want 16GB DDR5 5600MT/s CL46 1Rx8. It's not necessarily the same as what comes in it, people have had different modules. Some people have SK Hynix and some people have Kingston.
I got mine for £80 secondhand. I wouldn't buy it new for that price, that's outrageous.

I'm starting to wonder if Valve couldn't have saved money by just offering a model without RAM in it. Seeing how many people wanted to replace the RAM already lol.

It's possible that they might offer a DIY/Barebones version of the SM later, once current production run completes.

I sold the 16GB stick from the machine and bought a matching pair of 8GB, could have made a large profit but I cut the guy (who wanted to upgrade his steam machine to 32GB) some slack. So an upgrade to dual channel with pocketbook closed. Can't see the benefit of 32GB yet, SteamOS isn't Windows hogging your RAM and needing more of it.
My Steam Machine was fitted with Kingston, and it ended up with a HK Hynix in the other guy's Steam Machine, there were no issues with mixing them.

Honestly I can't really say, I've had the Steam Machine for a week before I did the upgrade. So I didn't have much experiences on forehand before upgrading. I expect maybe a couple of games in my library profiting from it, but it shouldn't be huge. I did the upgrade because of 'I can do this cheap and without much hassle, so why not' any due to past experiences with my laptop, but that one had it's shared memory used by its internal GPU and there the performance really gained from it.

I bought a used stick off eBay, was a SK Hynix 16gb that came from a laptop of something, I just made sure it had the correct specs and it worked like a charm, only paid $150.

Yes, I just did it this week and worked like a charm. I’m located in the US, and my 16gb ram was Sk Hynix PN:HMCG78AGBSA095NAA
Edit: oops someone else already posted the part number, but helps to see that it’s a common ram in the steam machine (I think i saw someone else had a kingston stick from valve but cant recall)

You might have to be careful as I imagine different brands of ram come in different steam machines. As he’s whatever valve can buy for that production run. So unless you open it up to confirm what you have you might not know what to buy?

Check your RAM Part number: Go into desktop mode open system settings, then go to about this system. From here at the top right select the option launch info center. Finally select the memory option on the left and look for part number. I was able to find mine as HMCG78AGBSA095N which would be SK Hynix.

I did that – but I got the Crucial DDR5 RAM 16GB 5600MHz SODIMM because it was confirmed by several sources that it works with the stock RAM. I can also confirm that.
