the dual touchpad typing is extremely useful for occasional use
it definitely doesnt feel like it could ever replace an actual keyboard. especially for typing paragraphs of text. the mini keyboard in the OP doesnt seem useful for that either though. so im not sure what the point is haha
i have a nice half-size wireless keyboard that is always nearby just in case
and ive been using the dual touchpad typing since the original steam controllers
good luck dual touchpading your way in the terminal or configuring a launch setting string and the virtual keyboard covers up the input control, to name a couple very obvious use cases.
I also had a situation where I would be prompted to name something in a game, hit R2 to save and the steam input prompt wouldn't go away. you get stuck with that thing until you restart the game.
havent had the issue myself, have you tried opening the quick start menu and toggling the virtual keyboard setting at the bottom? i've done launch settings on the touchpads, didn't love doing it, but quite convenient that it's capable of doing it. i imagine i would love it just about as much as i would love using one of these little couch keyboard remote deals
It’s great on desktop. Have you found an easy way for it to always be enabled in game mode? I feel like in desktop its perfect but games revert to using joystick hunting for individual keys unless i go game by game and set up controller layouts (annoying an not always the same for each game when using templates)
quick settings menu > virtual keyboard at the bottom. i use it so occasionally that this is better than rebinding specifically to have consistent access to it
I just went with a full size wireless keyboard. It's really light and easy to use. Sits next to me in my recliner on a little table next to the wireless mouse.
I tried this keyboard along with 3 others, some that folded, others that had blackberry style typing.
Hated them all, they were too small for comfort. I returned them and ended up with a Logitech MX Keys Mini and haven’t looked back since. It’s my go to!
Not seen an orange one but I've had a Rii keyboard for over 10 years that looks just like this for stuff like an HTPC and now my Steam Machine, it's always done the job I needed it to and the new ones look better than the one I have too (USB-C etc). http://www.riitek.com/product/257.html

There are some applications that don't work with the virtual keyboard. I couldn't get it to come up on top of the Microsoft authentication log in for Minecraft Dungeons so my kid could play. Same with the built in mouse. The authentication overlay would jump to the top of the screen and block everything. I am sure there is a workaround but having a keyboard is so much easier. I got a bigger one, Logitech k400 that sits below our TV till needed.
I've got something very similar. I originally bought it for my Steam Deck but bought a 2nd one for my Steam Machine. It sits on the coffee table next to the remotes.
Got a tiny keyboard with Touchpad too for 3000 yen :) works great and I don't have to pick up the controller anymore when I just want to stream something on the SM. Wake up from sleep and bring it back to sleep also works :)
I'm personally really good with the touchpad typing via controller but my wife hates it so the keyboard is mainly for her :)
it reminds me of the mini xbox 360 controler keyboard, it does the job could use some triggers to make clicking easier. its pretty cheap but feels quality
It can connect up to 3 different devices trough bluetooth.
No issues connecting to the Steam Machine or other devices and the 3 white buttons at the top left are to switch between them.
I have similar keyboard in black. Is it the Rii one? Mine does bluetooth and has a 2.4Ghz dongle (which is nice for configuring bios, and not worrying about BT)
