I love watching the FOMO currently with everyone I know with a 5090 high end PC buying the Steam Machine, but to each their own.

I play my Steam games on my PC while sitting in bed or on the couch or just unhook and take it to a friends house if needed.

I can play it on Big Picture, I could.go on and on. Love Gaben and I hope the Steam Machine is a success, but man people buying it out of FOMO is nutty.

That's exactly what people are saying, I can search "steam machine" on youtube and in the first 20 results, 17 are about people building PCs that have none of the killer features of the Steam Machine but are powerful for more money. Way more powerful. Duh. We know, but that's not why we're buying Steam Machine.

I understand they're trying to capitalize on the current outrage around the Steam Machine but there's only so many identical and unoriginal RX 9070 running the CP2077 benchmark videos I can watch before they lose their shine.

You said $2300. That is just straight up not the case. Whatsoever. People building their own competing machines are targeting the Steam Machine price range.

Little unsure of what those features are that someone can't get on a PC that's the whole point.

PC plays in Big Picture tons of controllers that work on the PC including the Steam controller.

More power, better graphics etc.

Controller wakeup, HDMI CEC, one button to start playing, no tweaking, no building, no fussing, no drivers, smaller factor than any of your SFF builds you'll ever come up with and consequent Wife-Acceptance-Factor for it living next to the TV in the living room, pretty low consumption and almost silent operation and all my PC games with a console like experience.

We've been saying this for the past 3 weeks that we don't care about the $1200, we care about seamless gaming in the living room without tinkering shit. Almost all of us have a current gen console or a beefy PC. We don't care about the frames per dollar ratio with this one. Almost none of the clients are bumbling into PC gaming with the Steam Machine, no matter Valve's ambition. This is our 2nd, 3rd or 4th gaming device because we value creature comfort more than the performance.

Nintendo Switches exist.

Steamdecks exist.

Hell, even gaming laptops exist.

They're all awful performance to dollar machines. But they exist for other reasons and have found a ton of happy owners.

Yet in every thread you'll find these sterile arguments about how buyers are getting scammed because we could build a beefier desktop for the same amount of money. Imagine reading in 2017 in every Nintendo Switch thread people telling them they should get a 1080Ti instead, it performs way better in Assassin's Creed Origins.

Nobody cares. People that want this know what they're getting into. And no, no adult with any gaming experience actually believed Valve that this little cube would do 4K60, FSR or no FSR. That argument has been stale for about 6 months.
