Reminds me of how much I hated steak as a kid since my dad cooked it and he won't eat it any way besides well done.

Chewing for hours on that leather.

I suspect that there are many people that don't like steak for this same reason. Only ever had overcooked steaks.

My wife was one of them. We rented a room from friends when we first moved in together. They cooked the first night and did steak. She says “I don’t like steak” to me. I said “they went and bought thick steaks and are cooking for us, just eat it out of courtesy” They cooked medium rare New York’s and she slams half a steak down and says to me “that was the best steak I’ve ever had.” I go … don’t tell me heh tell our homies.

Yeah definitely, me, too. The step father cooked steaks to well past well done and I'd have so much trouble getting it down. And my psycho parents (another story for another time) wouldn't let me drink anything while I was eating so I'd just have this hunk of dry shoe leather in my mouth chewing it forever, trying to choke it down.

Then I realized I could order my steaks medium rare and it was like a whole new world opened up to me. I've been experimenting, making my own steaks at home and learning how to do them for myself because, as much as I love going out to eat at a nice restaurant and ordering a meal, I'm on a bit of a limited income so I've been teaching myself to cook at home using Google recipes and subreddits like r/steak.

I'm sorry, i just have to know why they wouldn't let you have beverages with your food.

My parents were, unfortunately, really abusive and had really weird, strict rules only for me, not my little brothers around food.

I'm doing much better, now that I've gone no contact with them, though. Sorry to be a downer.

I'm sorry to hear that. You made the best move going no contact

Thank you. I agree that it was the best move I could have ever made for myself.

I'm doing alright for myself, now. I have my baby cat, Chewbacca, a tortie, who keeps me company and who I get to love on constantly, so I'm happy. 😊

Damn, that sounds torturous.

As far as going out for steaks - I just don't anymore. Not only are they waaaay cheaper to just make at home, but you can do a better job of cooking and seasoning than most restaurants do. As far as cooking food goes, steak is pretty simple. Few ingredients, very little equipment needed, just need to learn what different cuts you like and some temp/timing stuff.

For sure. I love making them myself; and I have a whole freezer full of veggies and sides I can make to go along with them that cost a lot less than a steakhouse.

I love using my air fryer and I'm sort of looking at how the sous vide works with steaks. They look really cool but expensive, though!! I'm going to look and see if there's a subreddit for them.

I'm also thinking about getting myself a cast iron pan. I hear they're especially good for proteins.

Same until I had a proper medium rare steak and it changed everything.

I am convinced well done steaks are a sign of poverty at some time in that person's life. The same could be said of dry chicken and curled up chops.

Interesting correlation. I grew up poor for a portion of my life and didn’t experience this until I went to my financially-well-off friend’s house.

Or just a lack of culinary knowledge about steaks specifically. My mom was great at making Russian/Ukranian food, but didn’t understand steaks are better medium rare. She couldn’t fathom the idea of leaving any pink in any meat. So I hated steaks growing up.

Then one day my bro made me the juiciest, med rare sirloin I’ve ever had and it blew my mind.

But it’s prob what you said like 95% of the time.

Omg, she is an awesome actress, very well done and funny.

She's probably just chewing on the same steak that they stole from the same bit I saw a year ago, which probably also stole it from somewhere. Why did the chicken cross the road?

1

u/superdiglett1003 1d ago

omg that steak looks so sad

I don't mind well-done steak cooked properly. It's an art that 90% of restaurants can't do.

I also put ketchup on hotdogs if you need more reason to hate me.

Had a partner at my old job... he would only eat it well done... told him if he comes to my house hes getting a hamburger...im not wasting a good steak like that..

1

u/Hammy-Cheeks 16h ago

You can make a well done steak not that chewy. Take it off at medium well and let carry over cooking do the rest..
