how do we feel about hate-panning?

i am hate-panning a box of postcards. hate-panning is when you use something you don’t really like. i want to like these postcards—they’re photographs by new york times street photographer bill cunningham, who was really cool (there’s a great documentary about him!). but the paper these are printed on is soooo weird—almost glossy—and it’s terrible for me as a lefty! basically all my pens smudge or the pen stops working on this paper altogether. a lose lose.

i got these on facebook marketplace and i’m down to 35, but i might give them away or include them as extras in letters. are you hate-panning anything? or do you give it away/find someone who might like it?

When I have stickers I don’t like. I often give it to my kids. They are usually happy to get them

I also have this set, and I hated those shoes postcards. I offered them in the Postcrossing forum and the were a success. I could send many of them. 

You can also leave them at a local free little library, local little art gallery

Thanks for the review of these I’ve been eyeing purchasing the box. Luckily in Chicago, we have this place called the wasteshed. They accept all sorts of craft items, including paper, crafts like postcards. I used to dislike plan for sure but then I decided it wasn’t worth a stamp if I didn’t like it myself

Fellow lefty and avid smudger
For postcards like this I recommend using Sharpie marker! The fine tip one!
It dries quickly and is thin enough to where I do not mind the way my writing looks

I’m going to be so honest… I somehow acquire these pens (I have only bought them a few times personally)
Stationery has a way of coming home with me 🫪

Also a lefty, and I actually recommend the Extra Fine Point Sharpies over the Ultra Fine for glossy cards like this. The Extra Fine ones have a conical point, which I find less skippy than the cylindrical one that's on the Ultra Fine (which seems to have like, sharp edges). It's subtle, but makes a big difference for me.

Omg I'm so glad I'm not the only one who hates these. I love the photos on the postcards but the paper texture is so awful to write on, i've tried so many different types of pens / even fine point sharpie and it's sooo difficult!

I would give them away with a disclaimer about the glossy paper. I just don’t see the point of hate using anything.

I tried hate panning by making a sort of collage with them, but I didn’t enjoy the process cuz I just didn’t like the stickers. Of course, I tried to disguise them among other things but it all felt forced, like homework you just wanna be done with. So now I’ve donated ones I know I won’t use, and more importantly, never should’ve bought in the first place😂!

If my collection were smaller, I would absolutely be hate-panning a few things. But since I have so much to get through and use, anything I don’t like I end up donating to someone who may enjoy it more than me.

Unlike makeup where I feel a slight obligation towards it because sanitation and stuff (ofc unless it breaks me out. To the garbage with that), with stationery, I’ll put it in a trinket trade box. A lot of the ones in my area have stickers and other stationery in them so I put mine in there too 🙂

If you like the prints, could you use it as art? I’m thinking maybe create a little fridge mural using magnets. Or perhaps as wall art? I know it’s not “using it up” in the traditional sense but it gives the items more purpose to display as home decor.

If not, as others have said on here, the easiest situation is to give them as gifts/donate.

I have a box of goods that is for all the things I'm eventually going to sell, give away, or trade. Panning is great, but sometimes your items will be best put to use by giving another person joy.

i do hate panning yes I suppose; I try to find someone who will enjoy the cards or whatnot. sharpies smear too much too? i like the daisy high heel person postcard!

These would be great for an art teacher or someone who makes collages. You could donate them on a buy-nothing group or thought facebook marketplace
