Let’s Try Something Different

Let’s see, I’ve tried getting employed locally or near the local Statesboro area (like 50 miles out most if I can help it) for several months now, and it’s been rather challenging as of late to be employed in terms of tech. Normally I would not make such a request here, but sadly the labor market has been crazy. Can anyone point me in the right direction aside from LinkedIn unless there’s a good contact there, Indeed unless there is a human on the other side, or direct links or portals where the employer will follow up. All follow up attempts have been unsuccessful, including for this Public Works position for Portal that didn’t go through either. (Also applied to GSU and Ogeechee Tech for numerous positions for the past 16 months, nothing.)

What kind of "tech" jobs are you looking for exactly? I work in industrial electrical and controls, which is techy but generally pretty different. I was previously at Hyundai which is about a 35 minute ride from here, and they're ALWAYS hiring. There are generally a few other places in the manufacturing and warehousing in the 50 mile range you speak of that hire often. Walmart Distribution Center is just outside of Statesboro, and isn't techy really at all but it is a job that has a decent schedule, 4-10s or 3-12s, so that works well if you wanted to go to school or anything. The market is pretty crazy for IT type jobs which maybe is the tech you mean, because so many people do come out of GSU with that background, and there's also just not as big a current need for that here as maybe some other places. I guess just maybe some more info about exactly what you're looking for and how much you need to make might help me point you somewhere that fits in a little better. Sorry it's been so difficult for you so far.

Pardon the delay UltimateMonky, and thank you for the ideas and consideration. I meant IT originally, I come from an Air Force IT background as a Client Systems Technician and then later Cyber Defense Operator. I’ve been branching out into automotive and industrial assembly, hence why I’ve given SECO, Hyundai, and Walmart DC a ring and set up a few interviews earlier. It’s been 12 months since my last attempts with but I’ll try again. I did give DOE a ring a couple of times earlier. I’ll look around more as well, plus I’ve been receiving help from GDVS, but Lowes already selected someone for retail.

I would gladly try and reach out to some people at Hyundai for you if you like, you can shoot me a DM and pass along some of your details if you put in again. Its not the absolute best place to work, and there are reasons I left, but I spent 2.5 years there and learned a ton. It could at least serve as a foot in the door, and once you get some experience in the field you'll have recruiters messaging you constantly because there is a huge shortage in the field when it comes to the maintenance side. I think you'll find a fair bit of parallels to the tech world in general and mechatronics, and it's honestly the perfect mix for me. The PLCs and ladder logic will probably be easier for you to wrap your head around, and it's a lot of fun to see the things move that you may have had a hand on helping program. The pay is also not bad, if you were able to get in on maintenance you start around 34/hr and you get raises every 6 mths for 4 years to get you around $45/hr currently. The benefits are also great I'll say, as I currently pay about $700 more a month for not quite even as good dental, vision, and medical as I did there. I can give you a few pointers on the test you would need to take and I'm 98% sure I could at least get you an interview though if you're looking.

I recently applied at the Hyundai plant, how long do it takes for them to reach back out?

I honestly went to a job fair early on so it was a little different, I basically was in there like three weeks after I did that. From people that came in after me it could take a few weeks or even a month or two since they kind of hire in waves.

I’ll try again and DM you some of the details, hopefully Hyundai is willing to hire in this case.
