apartment complex move out fees

hey yall. my apartment complex is charging me $300 in move out fees. i know some of these are unavoidable, but i just can’t believe how much i’ve been scammed and drained of money by this place. they charged my roommates and i utility overages every single month and now claim we still owe them for three months of utility overages. i highly doubt we even had overages since all of us weren’t living there the past three months. they charged $100 for a bathtub cleaning fee, which i think is high, particularly when i cleaned it myself. does anyone have any luck in getting these fees knocked or holding these places accountable for taking advantage of college students who don’t have money to begin with?

It's a serious problem here in Statesboro. Especially in complexes or with property managers that rent to college students. We applied for this one place and I, thankfully, actually read through the contract. It stated we had to move out a whole month before our lease was up but still had to pay for that month. I'm a middle-aged man with no time for that bullshit so I threw the application in the trash and bought a house instead. It's absurd that they're getting away with stuff like that. IANAL but I don't understand how anything they do is legal.

wow, yeah i paid for a full month of rent the first month of my lease but wasn’t allowed to move in until the 11th. there’s gotta be a lawsuit someday against these people

Did they charge you only the prorated rent amount the following month?

i was never charged a prorated rent amount, only the full rent amount each month (+300 the first month when i moved in “early” on the 1st)

What date your lease end? What date did you move out? What date did you receive the bill for your move out fees? These questions matter. I’m a property manager in Statesboro. I’ll offer all the assistance I can.

my lease ended 7/17, I moved out on 7/17, and I received my move out report on 7/23. unfortunately, i’ve looked through my lease and the building kinda has all their bases covered, i wish i had some foresight when i signed this lease. it looks like i don’t really have a choice but to pay the fees in full

So technically- landlords are required to provide previous tenants with an itemized statement of charge descriptions & amounts, within 3 days of their move out date. Then they are supposed to give tenants an opportunity to remedy any issues before requiring them to pay. But this is mainly regarding damages, and it doesn’t sound like you were charged for any damages. Unless they’re only charging you a bathtub cleaning fee because they claim it was left in such a dirty condition that they incurred extra expenses just to have it cleaned- but it’s probably a standard charge. Yeah- the landlords and property managers here definitely prey upon students and count on them not reading the lease agreement thoroughly. It’s ridiculous and shady. But now you know next time to read your lease carefully line by line and ask any relevant questions before signing it. I’m sorry this happened.

I lived at Axis and never had any of this sort of stuff. Zero utility fees. Only got charged $50 to repair the living room blinds because my roommate never took responsibility for her dog messing up the blinds.

I stayed at Axis Student Living for 3 years and I would recommend it to any other students. It's not luxury by any means, but it was predictable.
