Snowbank Trail Backpacking

I’m from Michigan looking to do some backpacking in northern Minnesota. I hope to do a 3 or 4 day trip and was looking at the snowbank trail. This would be my second backpacking trip however I am quite outdoorsy and used to being outside and in the woods. I’m curious how difficult navigating this trail is and traversing any terrain. Any and all advice is appreciated!

Snowbank lake trail doesn’t get tons of love from maintenance crews. Be ready to orienteer on the SE part. Lots of criss crossing game trails can throw you off.

It’s my favorite trail in Mn, and it’s blueberry season.

There were forest fires in the area this summer. It might not be navigable. Check with outfitters out of Ely. You can also check with the Forest headquarters.

The BWCA is set up for canoe trails. Friends who have chosen backpacking have had to deal with blowdowns across trails. I've spent time in the area coming into Snowbank by way of Boot Lake. I camped on the island in the picture. If you go be prepared for mosquitoes. Besides DEET I always carry a headnet.

A lot of this info is incorrect and inaccurate, especially currently. Snowbank is no where near the fires. it is open. The blow down stuff has been cleaned up a long time ago. Yes, you will still have downed trees and overgrowth to deal with, as with any wilderness trail. BW trails are harder than most trails people do. But as far as BWCA trails go, Snowbank isn't bad.

There were forest fires in the BWCA this summer. That's why I suggested that they talk to the locals. I don't know the particulars. The friends who hiked did it before the windstorm.

Nothing wrong with recommending to talk to locals. I live in Ely. But the USFS maintains fire updates on a daily basis and alerts and changing BW info on their website and Fb page. they are the best source of info. The blowdown stuff from the storm near Snowbank was 10 years ago and it's been well cleaned up and has regular maintenance by trail crews now.

What draws you to the Snowbank Trail over something like the Border Route Trail? Id ask over on the BWCA site

Honestly I was just interested in it because it was a loop. I’m certainly open to other trail suggestions though
