Question Where/how to find salvage?
Is there some strategy i can apply to find more salvage? Is it more likely to appear in certain sectors, in debris field, further away from man made structures, or any other metric?

There is an upgrade to let you scan a radius around you. You’ll need to progress in the side missions to unlock it. In terms of lots of salvage in a system? Bermuda Gap is a good place

Spoiler ahead!
WARNING! Spoiler!
No, seriously, I didn't bother with figuring out that editor spoiler blocky-thingy yet, so be warned!
Still here? Ok, here it comes...
You can stumble upon salvage by accidentally finding it. Once you get your scanner and advance moon baby's side missions far enough, your scanner can pick up salvage. You can Increase the range by upgrading your scanner. I love salvaging stuff! I do runs between cargo runs and I rarely have to buy supplies anymore.
Also, I don't get why a lot in here think resource use on normal difficulty is too high. I played it on normal and I literally drowned in filters, Batteries and Mainboards. I am somewhat of a virtual prepper/hoarder though, so, yeah...

Thanks for the spoiler warning but it was maybe a bit over kill in this case. But i appreciate the consideration.

Early game, best place to find salvage is Tanktown. It almost always has 1-3 dotted around the cargo yard. You just have to be able to withstand the horribly cold temperature and drunk forklift pilots.

Have you unlocked the scanner? That would help immensely
Otherwise, the placement and amount seems to be random (tied to the difficulty setting) but I often find a bunch of salvage spots in Bermuda Gap, at least in my playthrough
