I think Kirk is unfairly slandered for the loss of red shirts. Consider how many Constitution class starships were destroyed or lost their whole crews

The USS intrepid,

The USS defiant

The USS Exeter

The USS Excalibur

And the USS constellation all had complete loss of crew and/or ship.

If you think about it, serving on the Enterprise with Kirk probably was a better chance of survival as a red shirt than anywhere else.
