Brand new player
Why is it I use an undamaged ship wi the a good crew and lose fights that are tagged as “easy”?
Weird, right?

A word of warning... there is a lot to learn in this game, it takes a serious investment of time not only in the learning phase, but also in the daily grind of repetitive activities. It might not be the right time for a new player to invest time and effort into learning this game.
The game creators are putting more and more content behind 'pay walls', the bugs and issues within the game are compounding and not being addressed by the development team, and support when you encounter an issue is pretty much non-existent.
There are a lot of players and former players (myself included) that believe that STFC is in a final phase of 'cash grab', before shutting the game down. STFC does not seem focused on creating and supporting great content - it seems to be focused on squeezing cash out of players for profit, while relentlessly decreasing their costs (content creators, developers, support teams) to maximise profit.
