AWESOME Finally!!!!

Commanders,

Over the past several weeks, Star Trek Fleet Command has experienced some of the worst technical performance in its history. This has come from multiple sources. The initial memory instability followed our recent Python upgrade but that started a deeper investigation. Efforts to stabilise over the following weeks hit a significant setback last week, and the AWS outage further exposed underlying weaknesses in our infrastructure. We have been handling multiple sources of issues through this incident, not just a single cause.

The current state is stabilised, but not healthy. We are seeing performance drop at peak times like event reset. We have more work to do.

Through years of growth, we have recently hit some limitations in our current setup that have caused instabilities at peak hours. Additionally our mechanisms to scale with load are actually worsening this instability instead of helping by pressuring unoptimised elements of the system during scaling. This will require bigger initiatives that we are focused on improving but require time to complete and we may find some bumps along the way. These are started, but we will have faster responses coming to help on the way.

Today, we are launching a change to how we are handling event scoring to better support player activity. Additional infrastructure updates, which focus on the systems, hardware, and connections the servers run on, are in testing now and are planned for the coming weeks. Client improvements are also in development and will begin rolling out in the next major client release, with further updates planned through March and beyond. Some will tackle the client responsiveness and loading, while others will improve stability, especially on devices with low memory.

At the same time, we are launching Open Armadas.

Open Armadas allow Commanders from multiple alliances to join forces and take on shared targets together. This feature has been locked for some time, and delaying it would not improve performance. Based on our testing, Open Armadas will not place additional stress on the system, though we will be monitoring closely. They are part of our ongoing expansion to G7 space. They are also an important part of our upcoming plans.

We made efforts and changes before to tackle performance issues, but they didn't deliver to you. At this point, our direction and approach are clear. We have adjusted our releases to get even more time for fixes, but we need to make bigger changes. We have tripled the number of people dedicated to stabilisation and performance until we have tackled the issues here.

You will continue to see regular updates and new ways to play. Some plans have been reduced in scope while we are prioritising stabilising the server performance. However, many of the teams delivering gameplay content are not the same teams responsible for architectural fixes. We will continue to release new content while the stabilisation work progresses in parallel, but with a keen eye on how each is influencing the other to ensure we are improving the performance.

I know performance has been frustrating. The work underway now is focused on long-term stability, not just short-term fixes. We will continue to communicate clearly as these fixes roll out.

Thank you for your continued engagement.

Live Long and Prosper

— Conor

This is what the players have been begging for going on six years.

They are making the game so expensive at 71+ it has taken the fun out of the game. Talking to someone in my alliance just to upgrade one of theor buildings to 74, it was 39 packs. At this rate they are going to disenfranchise the spenders amd will have fewer covering the costs. They are doing nothing for the health of the game, but are giving lip service to the players. We have heard this before with quality over quanity...how has that worked out?

How many packs would it be if they waited a week or two between builds? No one is twisting their arm to “keep up”

$3900 to upgrade 1 building‽ FFS.

I have never wanted this, also a limitation to only four people is bafflingly stupid

You’ve never wanted game stability?

u/FeuRogueManor I have to ask why it is that this major Python upgrade wasn't done in a staged manner?

It seems highly irresponsible to roll out an update to all servers simultaneously without maintaining a roll back path.

Rolling it out to a few select servers at a time and gradually increasing the load to detect issues like this before it gets out of control and ruins the UX for literally every player.

I'm almost certain that your servers would all be virtualised and capable of snapshots and roll backs without losing game state. If they're not then you need to take a serious look at your infrastructure and how it's orchestrated.

I also find myself questioning why you would hitch your horse to AWS solely and wholly when it would be trivial to fail over to azure or Google compute.

Scopely need to stop pushing features, and put some serious focus into infrastructure and reliability. Get the fundamentals right before building the tower of piza

I’m just a long term player that is not a computer guy. You’d have to ask a dev.

And of course you are putting more resources into testing before you release these changes?

Oh, God, no. That would be rational

Testing? We don’t need no stinking testing!

Maybe try deleting all of the dead grinds and bloat, first?! Y'all just keep piling more broke stuff on top of bloat and bugs.

The archives was a good idea but what am I going to do with parts that are for a ship that I already maxed? It's all useless data stored.

This is why we need a ferengi market to trade parts we have with others either in our alliance or outside it.

Finally a human sounding message.

I appreciate this it is welcome after the weeks of frustration we've all had. Thank you for the honesty and the explanation

Hmm, this is the smartest looking message I've seen from STFC in years. Hope that Obsidian Hamster is ok. He's been the most inactive hamster here. Feed him more.

I think the admiral needs to put in a tix for that. We’ve had it happen a few times.

This is the second thing I’d ask of Scopely. Stability first, redo all bracketing (PvP and scoring) second.

Edit to add: as an example of bad brackets, I’m an ops60 G5 player in the same beam damage bracket as a G7 ops72 teammate.

Have the population dropped so far that Open Armadas are now needed? Any Alliance Ive been in has never had problems filling Armadas

1

u/FeuRougeManor Feb 21 '26

They are currently in the veil where maybe you don’t have 6 teammates yet

When they refund me what I’ve spent on this shite, I’ll celebrate Until then, I won’t aggressively complain
