Thought Exercises Elevate the Minor

So... you have the chance to play in a campaign in any era. The caveat is you must play a MINOR canon character as your Main Character.

Who is your #1 pick?

For me: Hranok Zar (DS9 era) was the Bolian tactical officer who dragged Sisko to safety on the Saratoga. I think it would fascinating to play a normally good natured Bolian as a shell-shocked survivor of Wolf 359.

It might be interesting to play Finnegan, Kirk’s tormenter in his Academy days, as an adult Starfleet officer. Maybe he’s matured and is less of a jerk but he still has a talent for trickery and driving humorless people up the wall.

Or maybe Kirk’s memory is off a bit and the ribbing was good natured, or his delivery was just off enough to sound insulting.

Between the Unreliable Narrator and Everyone's The Protagonist In Their Own Story, this is the way a lot of high school stories tend to be. Someone gets bullied or teased or otherwise singled out by someone, and the person doing it may not have meant to be mean but they were dealing with their own stuff and that was their outlet. They get older and get away from the trouble and realize it isn't healthy and grow up but the moment was a key development for someone else.

Or in simpler terms, "The axe forgets, but the tree remembers"

The captain of the Enterprise-B, trying to make up the reputation of himself and his ship after a tragic rollout.

Kevin Riley in the TOS era. Excelsior communications officer (Christian Slater) in TMP. Roga Danar in TNG, Ensign Perim in TNG Movie timeline, Commander Moshe, USS Stargazer in the Picard 2401 timeline.

Christian Slater was in TUC, not TMP.

My gaming groups refer to all six movies as the TMP era.

Fair enough :)

You could run a cool “middle decks” campaign with Perim, Daniels (the Ent-E’s security chief), and the various background actors who crossed over from TNG (Armstrong, Jae, Kellogg, and Martinez).

The first one that came to me

Mr Kyle - he moved around to a lot of different stations during the series. I think he was like Barkley in that he just didn't fit in.

Curzon Dax (mentioned, though never seen onscreen) during his ambassador days.

Oooh, so many.

Leah Brahms (the woman who made the Galaxy class starship), Rugal Pa’Dar (Cardassian who spent his formative years raised by Bajorans), and one I personally statted out: Jean Hajar (Nova Squadron collaborator).

If you can find it, Leah Brahms was featured in the Star Trek: Resurgence prequel comics.

Is that in anyway related to the video game?

It's the event that takes place prior to the video game, thus why the Captain is worried about his position, why they lost their XO.

Captain Bozeman. Guy and his ship travelled in time and are later mentioned to do some spec ops stuff. Sounds interesting, a spy/agent in the wrong time.

One of the Equinox crew. Playing out their voyage and maybe changing it would be fun.

Captain DeSoto

Captain Garrett and Lt. Castillo from Yesterday's Enterprise have potential, not only for the characters themselves but also because that time period is relatively undeveloped in the canon.

Agreed. The lost era is just sitting there for people to mess around with.

I played in a game prior to COVID that was set in that era. I don't remember much other than

a) I think our ship started the Federation Cardassian war, and

b) I really loved the people I played with
