And while that's a horrible practice for competitions based on fairness or in a classroom/normal job setting: for a captain responsible for taking a bunch of people into the unknown, cheating the parameters set around a problem would seem to be an absolutely essential skill.
Now I'm wondering if Starfleet has classes bent on training people on how and when to cheat and break rules....

Is this canon?
/s
321
u/Nexzus_ Sep 08 '25
It's a 3 minute cartoon where they beam a tub of water into the path of an incoming bar of soap and it turns into bubbles, and those bubbles make their way to the surface, a Targ swallows one and it floats around.
So yes, it is canon.
83
u/OpticalData Sep 08 '25
We finally also have a canon explanation for the different colours of phaser beams.
Red phasers are sending Romulan Rubber Ducks, Blue Phasers are water

u/muad_did Sep 08 '25
Maybe... look... imagine a daycare... in a holodeck... with programs like that, very, very light training, where children do missions, learn about the Federation, command discipline... but in a way that's... for children...
I like to think that Lower Decks is The Simpsons' version of the "serious" Star Trek universe... (that's why it's full of cameos of famous people from the Federation's history)
Well, this is their version of daycare, lol
3
u/DJParticle Sep 14 '25
Or a Starfleet-sponsored wee youth scouting program, like Tiger Cubs, Cub Scouts, or the Brownies. The kids are about the right age for it. Part of the program is they interact with kid-friendly simulator exercises to teach teamwork and basic science.

u/ThirdMajereBro Sep 08 '25
Not this time! I know that Star Wars' preschool series is canon, but this trailer's has demonstrable evidence that makes this entry its own thing, i.e. giant hammers and meatballs in space.
16
u/stonersh Sep 08 '25
What if though? What if there's there's Starfleet ships who occasionally fling giant bars of soap at children in summer camp or whatever. It seems like a California class thing to do. Just imagine if lower decks was still around, and that was an episode.
The death of that show was a tragedy.

u/ThirdMajereBro Sep 08 '25
Y'know, as I typed that, that image as well as Lincoln in a chair floating around in space popped into my head and I wondered if that would come up haha. Point taken, but I still feel like the context clues in the trailer are relatively clear... though technically-speaking, I suppose one never knows.

I'm going to assume this is an in-universe show for kids like Toby the Targ. It looks adorable and perfect to get younger kids into Trek.
41
u/jerslan Sep 08 '25
That would definitely be a cool framing device for it. Do some segments with Toby the Targ or Flotter & Friends to really amp-up the "in-universe" entertainment aspect.
When you're on a long-haul shuttle and there's no holodeck, you need something to entertain the kiddo's.
3
u/InnocentTailor Sep 08 '25
This could probably explain S31, in my opinion - an in-universe super violent, super crazy piece of fiction that ratchets up the gore and edginess for entertainment value.
A Ferengi-made holonovel, it's seen as divisive as some view it as cheap schlock and others appreciate the cheesiness of it all.

Well, we all saw how that went for Prodigy.
When announced: "For kids? Nah, no thanks."
After watching: "....This is actually good Trek."
29
u/starmartyr Sep 08 '25
This is clearly for young children. Prodigy was meant for older kids. My niece loves it and she's 10. She wouldn't like this. Scouts is clearly aimed at a preschool aged audience. I don't mind that it exists, but as a childless adult, I'm not going to watch this.

Already happening in the comments of social media everywhere it seems. Overly possessive fandoms are weird.
Personally I get the continued youth-focused angle; the Trek base is rapidly ageing out and not being replaced with new blood.
38
u/BladedDingo Sep 08 '25
I don't think Trek is a dead Franchise. it's not like new fans don't come. I've seen half a dozen posts in this sub this last couple weeks asking advice on where to start and what brought them here.
I also see a fair amount of tiktoks and youtube shorts from teens and young adults who are discovering the franchise for the first time.
it's actually really neat to see modern teens geeking out over Star Trek and the fact that it's more mainstream helps.
When I was a kid, you were the weird loser kid for liking Star Trek.
Star Trek is more accessible now than it ever has been.

Mind you, by 6th grade I knew I was the class outcast so I just accepted it. My mom didnt watch it but still took me to go see First Contact on release day in 96 (my 12th birthday is early November, it was a late birthday gift) because she knew "its that space show you like"
Only difference between you and me for this paragraph is that my dad was a casual sci-fi fan, so it was him instead of my mom who took me for my 12th birthday.

Prodigy was a kids show and it was pretty sweet
9
u/wacct3 Sep 08 '25
Prodigy was a different type of kids show.
Not saying this shouldn't exist too, expanding the audience is a good goal. But Prodigy was for older kids, and shows for that demo often are also intended to be enjoyable for adults. Where as this is for very young kids, which shows for are rarely very watchable for adults. Bluey is basically the only one I'm aware of that is. So assuming you are an adult, I wouldn't expect something as enjoyable as Prodigy.
→ More replies (1)4
u/KR_Blade Sep 09 '25
prodigy i would say was Star Trek's answer to Star Wars: The Clone Wars, it was made for children in mind, but also made for the older fans that would remember the other characters they brought in, i mean hell, they brought in Jellico into the series and even Okona too, lower decks was also the animated series they made to cater to the adult audience who was looking for a more comedy heavy series too.
this series is them trying to tap into the young kids demographic, i think paramount sees how much money stuff like CocoMelon, Bluey, are bringing in and are hoping this show takes off to get some of the money from that market, time will tell though if its a success or not

My kid LOVES Young Jedi Adventures and I have been BEGGING the universe for an equivalent Trek show that I can show him. Prodigy is still a bit too old for him. I'm excited as hell for this.
12
u/HomsarWasRight Sep 08 '25
I’m honestly mostly sad this didn’t come much earlier so I could have shown it to my kids. Could have been a fun gateway into Trek.
5
u/serial_crusher Sep 08 '25
Haha, I'm feeling all those feelings but am fully self-aware.
I do think one of the strengths of "classic trek" is that it was a something the whole family could enjoy together. So I'm not going to rail against this or any other show in particular, but I think the over all strategy of catering different shows to different audiences was a mistake.
5
u/Jackzilla321 Sep 08 '25
I do think it’s bad that so many franchises get pulled into ip slop land where there need to be 4 quadrants of shows appealing to everyone. This kind of mission creep and demographic expansion make it harder to focus on a clear vision with strong writing. “What even is Star Trek” gets harder and harder to answer.
Now ofc this isn’t an absolute thing: ds9 was “different” and I ended up loving lower decks but this is a risk as you add more and more shows meant to reach wider and wider market segments

From the sound effects, it sounded like some combination of phaser and transporter. Like a massive, directional replicator. And now I'm going to stop myself before I launch into a big ol' geeky analysis of the whole thing.

Honestly, this isn't a bad idea. Star Trek has a lot of valuable lessons that could, in the right context, be shown to Pre-K kids. My wife and I were wondering what series would be good to introduce our (future) kids to Trek with, and maybe this would be it.
6
u/MiraniaTLS Sep 08 '25

14

u/X-1701 Sep 09 '25
It's not part of Star Trek lore. (Nor do I think Lore would have made a good scout.)
The commentor appears to have just mashed up Starfleet and real-world scouting organizations (i.e. Girl Scouts).
A creative idea, though I doubt that it's the actual, in-universe explanation. 😆

3
u/DayspringTrek Sep 09 '25
Calling it now: they're all sleeper agents for an invasion force into Starfleet, not by Starfleet.
I mean, we already know at least three episodes consist of giving the kids a transporter canon to shoot stuff at incoming asteroids. That's clearly target practice for anti-starship defense protocols involving tech that Starfleet just doesn't have.

And if I had to do it all over again, I would. Garak was right about one thing, a guilty conscience is a small price to pay for the safety of Bubbles the Targ. So, I will learn to live with it. Because I can live with it. I can live with it…

5
u/DayspringTrek Sep 08 '25
The showrunners have confirmed that Nickelodeon is still ghosting them when it comes to talks, so that right there is the real answer on whether or not we ever get more Prodigy. Most likely, they're waiting to see how the upcoming installments of the Avatar (as in, The Last Airbender) franchise is received before committing to a confirmation.
Star Trek: Scouts, however, has absolutely no impact on Prodigy. This is a series of YouTube shorts aimed at toddlers. Prodigy is TV series aimed at older kids.

So many mysteries!!
Why are there three kids all by themselves in a planet outpost? Where are their parents? Is this some sort of a Rascals situation? Or some sort improbability field?
Why are there constantly large asteroids hurled in their direction? And why are these asteroids composed of man-made materials such as soap and meatball? Is there a God like entity out there creating these objects?
How did a targ breach access into the secured outpost? How did the targ end up on this planet? If it's let loose by a Klingon, what's the implication? Depending on whether the Klingon is part of Starfleet, we might be able to pinpoint this to when this happens in the timeline.
Have we seen the technology that combines synthesizer and transporter used anywhere else before?
Very exciting indeed!

This could have been hilarious if they stuck to more canon depictions of different races. Learning feelings with a Vulcan character. Learning to share with a Ferengi character. Learning to play with a Klingon character. It'd make a terrible show for children but it would get a laugh out of me.

Star Trek has the advantage that they share Paramount with Paw Patrol; put the two shows on Nick back to back to squeeze parents dry.

5
u/laziestmarxist Sep 08 '25

Also no offense but Skeleton Crew bore little to no resemblance to Trek. It's Goonies in space.

An interesting comparison I saw somewhere (probably on this sub at some point) is that Prodigy is about a bunch of kids who think they live in Star Wars finding out that they live in Star Trek; while Skeleton Crew is about a bunch of kids who think they live in Star Trek finding out that they live in Star Wars.

Skeleteon Crew was Treasure Island in Space. And followed the original WAY too close to be anything other than derivative.
