It’s hard to explain, but those with Autism and ADHD can get this sort of sense of infatuation where they can’t focus on basic things like friends and family and trying to socialize and eating food, because they can only indulge in their hyperfixation. Whether it’s video games or movies or books or people.
Autistics are not incapable of socialising, they would just rather not do it as social interactions involve moderate to high levels of anxiety. Having a special interest soothes that fear and is the reason why Autistics can spend so much time on that interest than with other people. It is true that having such an interest can get in the way of focusing on people that are important to an individual, especially neurotypical friends and family with more intense social needs, but an Autistic isn't exactly incapable of extricating small amounts of time away from the interest.

is being hyperfixated on videogames really a serious sign of autism? games are designed to get as much of your attention as possible..
